Des Moines June 29 President McKinley to attend the national encampment of the Union Veterans Union and likely visit Des Moines as part of a western trip. Date not fixed but expected around August 24. Colonel N W Rozelle says Department Commander Langstaff of Dubuque hopes the date soon set. He adds Henderson would also arrange to be present if the president comes.
Henry Kerr a Mt. Sterling businessman was shot and killed at Neva Missouri during a picnic when Alf Parrish allegedly discharged a 22 caliber rifle while moving a target. Kerr died instantly. a Mt. Pleasant physician arrived too late.
In Des Moines a group of 12 to 15 Iowa wholesale grocers outlined a plan to form a large corporation with headquarters likely in Chicago. The unit would buy California canned goods cereals salmon syrups and similar products for member firms and operate a general merchandise brokerage led by Colrank C Letts of Letts Pitcher & Co Marshalltown.
The Louisville Democratic State convention adjourned after nominating a full Goebel ticket led by William Goebel for governor. Goebel dominated proceedings, arriving with little delegate backing and leaving with party control and a Goebel bloc of appointees across statewide offices.
Joliet Illinois on June 29 reports a council clash as eight aldermen push a $500 liquor license despite a mayor veto. The veto was tabled and 80 plus applications approved, with a court likely to decide. Licenses must be secured by July 1, raising the prospect of a dry Fourth of July.
In LaCrosse Wisconsin on June 29, reports unfold about William FE. Reid & Co. a butter and egg commission business fast closed. Partners vanished leaving creditors, merchants, and farmers in southern Minnesota owed thousands. James Mulhall identified as Reid’s principal by the Pack er and National Produce Review of Chicago. He allegedly ran similar schemes in multiple western cities as part of a chain. Reid & Co. dominated local butter and egg trade by paying slightly above market prices for weeks.
Cape Town holds large meetings praising Sir Alfred Milner and pledging support amid Kruger’s push for arbitration. Sprigg warns secession if Milner loses backing as Transvaal buys war supplies and secures rail control. London reports Clan na Gael members traveling from the U.S. to aid the Boers.
In Jackson Michigan a shoe dealer Isaac Given faces a charge for secreting about 6000 dollars of stock with intent to defraud creditors. He claims poker nights in Chicago led to the loss of nearly all his business, while creditors report about 1200 dollars on hand when the store was closed. Monday banker C C Ames secured another arrest warrant for Given.
Crowds protested the electoral reform bill in Begum's capital. Demonstrators formed a mass, faced police, and gendarmes with bayonets after stones were thrown. Several were wounded. many arrests occurred as riots continued into the night and rain dispersed the crowd.
War department decides fines from summary or field courts are illegal and will reimburse hundreds of men. Reimbursements range from 1 to 50 dollars in settlements announced from New York. Governors of the New York Stock Exchange suspend business on Monday July 1 for a holiday through July 6 at 10 am.
In Des Moines Iowa on Tuesday a group of leading jobbers formed a buying trust with a single purchasing agent F C Letts of Marshalltown to handle California canned fruits salmon cereals syrups and related goods. They expectto spend about 20000000 annually once fully organized and to secure 6 to 15 percent savings versus the old multi buyer system.
Milwaukee hosted a daytime flower parade led by Governor Roosevelt and Governor Scofield with ex-governor George W. Peck as grand marshal. A nighttime fire-run by the Milwaukee Fire Department under Fire Chief James Foley drew over 20 000 spectators, traveling about one mile in three divisions in four minutes. Roosevelt visited the chamber of commerce and the Press club, receiving ovations.
John Loock swore before Peoria Bachelors' Club to wed only a widow or accept any club penalties. His wedding to Annie Fuchs was postponed indefinitely after her parents objected to publicity. Loock denounced the club but agreed to a compromise and will keep Sunday evenings at the Fuchs home.
In Waterloo Iowa on June 29 thirty two square inches of cuticle were taken from eleven volunteers including a woman Lydia Hinman Miss Hinman principal of the local high school and transplanted to Will Barrett a burned pupil to aid healing and survival. The volunteers were former schoolmates and the operation involved a female donor.
Milwaukee city directory records a population of 285000. The National Social and Political conference convenes in Buffalo. Plague reports reach Hong Kong Singapore and Saigon. Rear Admiral Sampson gets thirty days leave for rest. The Milleroze Berteaux duel in Paris leaves Berteaux with a cheek wound. President McKinley cancels western vacation due to Mrs McKinley’s illness.
The War Office plans to enlist volunteers for Philippine service. Reinforcements to General Otis target 40 000 by end of the rainy season. Enlistments at 70 stations nationwide will be for three years in volunteer units “at large” not organized by state. Officials expect rapid officer promotion from existing regulars and capable volunteers.
An attempted explosion at the First Avenue coal mine near Evansville failed when a keg of powder with a lit fuse was found. Night guards slept through the danger as strikers grow more desperate and threaten non union operation. National leaders Lloyd Mitchell and Davis arrived to discuss court action to lift an injunction set against Ingle.
