Compromise Iowa tax plan moves toward passage in Legislature
Iowa House approved a broad tax and school aid package aimed at boosting state school funding to about 36 percent of local costs. The plan would raise the sales tax to 3 percent, tax services, tobacco, beer, and higher personal and corporate incomes, and repeal the personal property tax for household goods while expanding homestead credits. The package, forged by Gov. Hughes and party leaders, would channel about 141 million dollars yearly to local schools, with weighted aid to poorer districts and a 18 to 20 mill property tax replacement.

Bomb Shatters Negro Rights Leader Home in Mobile
A dynamite bomb hurled from a car damaged the home of J. L. Leflore a Civil Rights leader in south Alabama near Mobile. No one seriously hurt. Leflore blamed white opponents in Jackson and filed a Justice Department complaint over a separate 1959 bombing fence. The blast ripped a wall as Leflore noted the fence’s purpose was to deter bombs and keep people safe.
