Only 19 bankruptcy cases were filed in Cedar Rapids division last year. The referee in bankruptcy term of J. Elsenbast expires July 8 and no new appointment will be made. Future cases in Benton Cedar Iowa Jones and Linn counties will be referred to the Dubuque division.
Des Moines assessments show 1944 hail damage down 25 percent from 1943 totals. The farm census tallies $14,000,175 in damage statewide against $13,232,824 last year. Federal statistician Leslie M. Carl notes most damage in the eastern region.
The six month old son of Mr and Mrs Charles La Coste north west of Floyd died when a rubber sheet covered the baby’s face in the crib while the mother briefly stepped outside, according to Coroner Carl Hauser.

United States District Judge Henry Graven ordered Clarence Beckers grocery in Manchester to stop slaughtering cattle or swine beyond office of price administration quotas. In Cedar Rapids, other actions related to the case were noted.
Washington June 28 James F Byrnes of South Carolina is expected to be named the new secretary of state to succeed Edward R Stettinius Jr. Stettinius will become American representative to the United Nations world security organization. President Truman announced he would name the new secretary Monday or Tuesday and that the appointee would not yet be in the government.
Warsaw announced the formation of a new Polish unity government led by Eduard Osóbka-Mohorski. Stanisław Mikolajczyk was named vice premier and agriculture minister, with the cabinet presented to President Bolesław Bierut after the Moscow conference.

Two new classes start tomorrow with a mothers and daughters class 9 30 to 10 30 a m and a beginners class for children eight and under at 10 30 a m.
