MEMPHIS Tenn. A drug store owner removed a low voltage hot seat device after fearing criticism. The gadget tied to a hand turned motor gave a small shock to a child on a window ledge used to browse comic books from a nearby magazine rack.
United Press reports a deadly Friday toll as early celebrations go wrong. In Kansas City Missouri two teen soda fountain workers die from a store fire sparked by supposedly safe fireworks, while Chicago warehouses burn and firefighters are hurt. In Keithsboro Indiana an elderly man, Joseph Fuller, 67, shoots at neighbors then dies in a house fire after setting it ablaze.
President Eisenhower declared Texas and Oklahoma major disaster areas and promised aid to parts of Kansas Colorado and New Mexico. Agriculture Secretary Benson flew to Fort Worth to assess needs and push fast action amid scorching heat and storm warnings.
In Saint Joseph Missouri two 63 and 64 year old former friends plan to resume a 50 year old interrupted marble match. George Johnson and Clyde Madison will play a ring game in Madison’s coal yard with Johnson’s rare marbles, possibly to be donated to a museum if he wins.
The House Appropriations Committee approved a 1954 military services bill totaling 34.454 billion dollars for the fiscal year starting July 1. It funds a third Forrestal class aircraft carrier and backs a 120 wing Air Force goal, rejecting Truman’s push for 148 wings. The measure falls below Truman and Eisenhower requests.
Prime Minister Winston Churchill must rest for a month prompting indefinite postponement of the Bermuda conference set for July. Downing Street cited medical advice and a need for rest, with Eisenhower signaling a temporary deferment and Eden abroad convalescing after surgery.
Fire destroyed the three story Yoder Feed Mill seven miles north of Kalona causing an estimated loss of 250000 dollars. Fire began about 1130 p.m. in the upper part of the mill and cause is unknown. Kalona and aid from Wellman and Hills fought the blaze for about two hours. The mill owned by Lester and Jonas Yoder will resume operations Monday with rebuilt equipment. About 2000 bushels of corn and oats, 40 tons of molasses and 500 tons of feed were lost.
Wapello, Iowa. Doris Fearing, 51, dies from a brain blood clot after injuries in a June 8 head on collision five miles west of Washington. She had been released from hospital a week earlier. The Fearing car carried Kenneth and a friend. their vehicle collided with a Chicago driven by Philip Briggs. Mrs Fearing suffered a fractured ankle and cuts. Briggs and Mrs Briggs are hospitalized in Iowa City in serious condition.
Iowa officials Marvin McLain and Howard Hill supported designating drought states as disaster areas and making surplus corn and grain available to sustain breeding herds. They urged expanding facilities and accelerating beef sales and exports to relieve Southwest cattlemen.
A 40 minute meeting between President Eisenhower's truce envoys and South Korean President Syngman Rhee sparks optimism for a possible armistice. Gen. Mark W. Clark attended as discussions extended to cabinet ministers and top U.S. and South Korean officials.
In Keithsboro a 15 year old, Dean Nylin, dies of wounds from a man who shot him and two other children, then set fire to his house and killed himself after an altercation over firecrackers. Joseph B Fuller, 67, shot Dean Nylin, his sister Sandra, 14, and cousin Richard Nylin, 13, as they shot off crackers near his three room house. Sheriff Robert Oagle says Fuller went berserk after being taunted to stop the fireworks. A neighbor recalled Fuller had warned he disliked children and had threatened to kill three families of children.
Washington stores will close Saturday July 4 and reopen for business Friday evening July 5, signaling a brief holiday break for shoppers and staff.
Mrs. Minnie Young, 78, died Friday afternoon at her Riverside home after a long illness. Services set for Monday at 2 30 p.m. at Trinity Methodist with Rev. L E Jones officiating. Burial in Riverside cemetery. Survived by one daughter, one brother, two sisters, seven grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.
The United States British and French high commissioners for Germany called upon Russia to permit free elections in the Soviet Occupation Zone. They argued this would pave the way for a peace treaty with a free and united Germany.
A. E. Baldrige county Red Cross chapter chairman announced today the annual meeting is postponed from July 1 to July 15. The meeting will be held in the courtroom at 7 p.m.
The House overwhelmingly backed President Eisenhower's defense reorganization plan in a 234 to 108 roll call vote, despite protests it could create a Prussian-style general staff and grant excess power to the Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman. Rep. Condon’s resolution to reject failed, while Devereux warned of real dangers and the plan takes effect at midnight Monday.
Irene Merstk, 40, Cedar Rapids, died when the car she rode in overturned in a muddy ditch about 15 miles south of Waterloo. The vehicle, driven by Roy A. Seeman, 39, Cedar Rapids, struck mud on the highway and rolled several times.
Robert S. Michaelsen will become director of the University of Iowa school of religion on December 1, succeeding M Willard Lampe. The change was approved by the state board of education. Michaelsen, native of Clinton, graduated from Cornell University in 1942 and earned bachelor of divinity and PhD degrees at Yale. He joined Iowa faculty in 1947, left last August for Yale, while Lampe will remain on a part time basis as professor emeritus.
Iowa State Board of Education approves contracts to add 53 units to Memorial Union Building at the University of Iowa. Financing includes a $517,000 loan toward a $1.255 million project, plus $295,800 for a polio ward and $202,638 for equipment at the hospital school for handicapped children.
Federal mediation averted a threatened Pullman conductors strike in Chicago and Los Angeles. A mediation agreement was signed at a meeting called by Leverett Edward of the National Mediation Board. The dispute centered on the dismissal of two sleeping car conductors with reassignment orders previously issued by National Railway Adjustment Board referees. The company agreed to reinstate them but rejected a precedent.
Reports from refugees say a 125 car freight train loaded with political prisoners was sighted moving east from Berlin toward Poland. Soviet martial law is blamed for mass arrests across 18 German cities and four rural districts. The Morgenpost notes more than 15,000 Germans arrested in the rebellion.
Central Iowa faces thunderstorms with lightning and rain, spreading to the northern and eastern areas tonight. Des Moines reports lightning and showers, with Pocahontas receiving 2.5 inches of rain Friday night causing temporary flooding and hail. Sunday to Tuesday forecast calls for mild to warm conditions with high near 80 and sun on Monday.
Five persons were killed and two injured in a head on automobile crash near Vandalia Illinois. The deceased include Leonard Lightfoot 25 his wife Bessie 34 and their niece Anne Ealey 20 all Chicago residents and Marshall Cleveland Johnson 25 Rector Arkansas and his wife. The Johnsons two young daughters aged about two and three were hospitalized. Police used acetylene torches to pry bodies from mangled cars with Mrs Johnson dying instantly and others succumbing en route or within hours after admission.
Milton Eisenhower, brother and special representative of the U S President, leaves Caracas for Bogota on the second stage of a Latin American goodwill tour. He is due in Bogota at noon where 200 Colombian Catholics await with a letter urging him to halt a Protestant missionary campaign seen as hindering U S Colombia ties.
