A journal photo shows two timber trunks, one 10 ft 4 in around and another 106 ft long, rising to an estimated 90 feet. The sign marks the footpath to Hayes timber off the county home road, with Dallas Kinney credited for the image.
Washington County Conservation Board advances three projects and publicizes Hayes Timber near Washington. Tom English notes Bruce Plum helped identify trees along established trails with labeled specimens and guides groups for nature study trips. Plans include auto access and a new parking area. Leichty timber south of Washington will be developed with bulldozed trails and a blue grass mowing area.
The Rev Alton Koch of Faith Lutheran Mr Pleasant will serve the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd as vacancy pastor until a new pastor is found. Summer services start 10 30 a m with Sunday school at 9 30 led by Koch. Koch will visit Washington Wednesdays for calls and meetings with the congregation.
The funeral for Bur dette Stover is set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Jones Funeral Home with Rev Clarence Dehne officiating. Graveside rites will follow at Memory Gardens in Iowa City conducted by the Odd Fellows lodge. Local lodge members are asked to meet at 2 p.m. to attend as a group.
A large barn six miles southeast of Columbus Junction was destroyed by fire on Thursday afternoon. Firefighters from Columbus Junction and Wapello prevented spread to other buildings, but the barn could not be saved. The owners are Mrs. Marguerite Allen and John Allen of Wapello, with the Neil Grim family occupying the farm.
Funeral services for J. Lewis Holmes were set for Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the Powell Funeral Home Keota with Rev. Donald Manwarren officiating and burial in Keota Cemetery. Survivors include four cousins in the Keota community Mrs Bess Hub er Claude Kenneth and Donald Holmes.
Funeral services for William M. Havel are set for Saturday at 10 30 am at Jones Funeral Home with Rev W J Stevens in charge. Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery. Havel died at his home Wednesday morning.
The American Field Service chapter formed in Washington in 1960 brings four foreign students to the public high school since then. Families host a year without pay, funded by $700 from the community with Kiwanis Rotary and Y's Men support. Lars Sjoberg from Sweden is set to return home next week.
Marion Hall owner of Hall's Feed Service at 602 East Third Street announced a Grand Opening for Tuesday June 30. Hall recently purchased the business formerly Foster Mill. Mr and Mrs Hall and Don Neff will greet guests from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Serving hot dogs milk coffee and pop plus prizes.
In PHILADELPHIA MISS their disappearance five days ago prompts a large search by White-hatted sailors and FBI agents. Teams of 5 to 15 men comb 10 square miles near town using rural roads and trails. The burned station wagon was found on a loggers trail near a swamp as efforts persist.
Randy Miller a 13 year old Kalona boy nearly drowned at Lake McBride after slipping under water Tuesday Curtis Mast 15 son of Mrs Eli Mast swam to his aid pulled him to shore twice Miller sank to the bottom in 12 feet of water Mast regained him and with others on scene got him to safety and shore.
Police report 17 year old Harry J Miller driven with his father’s 49 Chevrolet east on Highway 92 at dusk last night and turned into Deep Rock Service Station damaging the front window. The brakes held briefly, no charges filed, car damage set at fifty dollars with no building damage estimate yet.
Local post office service resumed its pre reduction hours with windows open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The change follows a Washington directed shortening of the work day, now reversed.
Mrs. Eliza Seitsinger aged 83 of Kinross died this morning at Lone Tree Nursing Home in Wellman. She was the widow of Jesse H. Seitsinger who died in February 1931. Funeral arrangements are indefinite. friends may call at Powell Funeral Home, Wellman. A junior high dance will be held at Washington YMCA Saturday from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Admission is 10 cents for members or 10 cents plus a 35-cent day pass for non-members.
United Press International reports Fair weather in Iowa with lows in the 60s tonight and highs near 90 to 95 Saturday. Sunday outlook stays warm and fair as the pattern continues.
A tractor trailer carrying 30 000 pounds of blasting powder exploded on Route 209 in Middle Smithfield Pennsylvania killing six people and injuring ten The blast destroyed buildings and utilities while police and Army personnel responded Firefighters from Marshalls Creek were among the dead and a Baltimore woman and a 23 year old school teacher were among the victims The truck driver escaped death after his vehicle was blown apart as he attempted to flag down responding fire engines The incident sent snakes from a local snake farm fleeing into the area prompting police to dispose of them.
National Bank of Washington will open Monday at 9 a.m. in its newly remodeled building, moving from the temporary site. The remodel adds a lock box vault, a 24 hour envelope drop, a walk up window, a north conference room, and a redesigned floor plan with a walnut interior and daylight style lighting. The bank’s main entrance faces Main Street and a three dimensional steel logo marks the exterior. The reopening is announced by vice president C P Weldin and cashier Richard Weeks. Earl Woods and Sons contracted the work. An open house will be announced later.
