John R. Hattery, Nevada banker and attorney and former Iowa highway patrol chief, and Gladys Louise Hansen of Nevada obtained a marriage license. They were married in the afternoon at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua.
More than 200 Marshall County choir members greet hymn singer Joe Emerson at Great Western station. Emerson will be guest of honor at the sixth annual church and Bible school day with a parade. Choir director is Fred Jacky of Chicago.
Private Donald Williams of 1% South Sioux City was injured when the army truck he drove overturned about 15 miles south of Sioux City during a convoy to Little Falls Minnesota for national guard maneuvers. The convoy included four companies of the seventeenth infantry stationed at Fort Crook near Omaha Nebraska.
Des Moines report says the 1949 state champion farm women's chorus will be chosen at the Iowa State fair with thirteen county choruses advancing from early summer preliminaries to finals at the fair. Director Mrs. Sarah Porter Ellis notes the state fair board offers 325 dollars in cash prizes to help defray travel expenses for the contestants.
Des Moines report notes Marjorie Elaine Welch of Logan topped 126 examining candidates with the highest written score. A Chattanooga College of Law graduate, she plans to practice with her father, Attorney William Welch, in Logan.
OTTUMWA. John Wilkins, a Wapello county farmer, is accused of holding two minor children of Jack Walker over a board bill dispute. Walker seeks habeas corpus. Judge Daugherty ordered the children brought to court. Wilkins says the children lived on his farm for months but were taken at Walker’s request and denies any board bill.
Des Moines reports ongoing efforts to control chinch bugs with creosote in 16 counties across southern and western Iowa. In some areas Kaine used last week has reduced young pests and delayed migration, but the infestation remains critical in about one third of the state with heavy levels in many counties. Migration is beginning in many counties and will surge on a wholesale basis within a week.
Herbert Hoover told the Republican National Convention that the United States must remain out of wars unless the Western Hemisphere is attacked and that the New Deal must be ousted. He warned democracy in Europe and urged calm realism, preparedness, and aid to allies without entering conflict.
Republicans move toward final platform with isolationist victory in foreign affairs plank settled after Dawes mediation. Wendell Willkie wins Stassen support and gains Minnesota votes as Dewey appeals to Texas and New York delegates.
With only a week remaining to file expenses for the Washington county primary six candidates have submitted affidavits to the county auditor. W W Schroeder spent 81.75 mainly on county newspaper ads cards telephone and postage. Mrs Harriett Coulter unopposed for county recorder spent 25.73 on announcements. J F Kraemer unopposed for county hospital board had no expenses.
Washington community gears up for a July 10 Red Cross war relief auction to boost county quota. Mayor Lloyd Lytle and the Chamber of Commerce back the plan with street use, while the Agricultural Conservation association mobilizes farmers. W G Eldridge chairs the county Red Cross fund and will form committees to receive and list donated items as volunteers assist as auctioneers and clerks.

British land, sea and air forces carried out raids on the German coast while intensifying aerial bombing on German bases. German bombing raids on England killed five and injured nine as British air attacks targeted Italy and Naples but were repelled.
Three prisoners escaped from Fort Madison on June 22 held up a filling station in Ames, took $21, fled west in a Missouri stolen car. Identified by owner Jerry Emmons and attendant William Loy. Suspects Sullivan, Haenye, and Estes, with prior hold ups in Missouri. police pursued a green sedan through Cedar Rapids but didn't catch it.
Over 400 corncob pipes are in circulation at 25 cents each as booster club chairman Al Goddard reports. Joe Simmering has sold over 200 at his North Iowa tavern, with pipes also available at the North Side restaurant Klein Klothing Ko Phillips Hebner drug store and the Chocolate Shop. Badges for the women's booster branch arrived and distribution plans for a new club are coming.
Military authorities said both entrances to the Panama Canal at Balboa Panama Bay were sown with mines during war games conducted at the Canal Zone on June 26.
In Des Moines on June 26 Charles D Reed of the Iowa Weather and Climate Service reported a week bulletin noting above normal temperatures and rainfall with good crop progress. Corn stands from a foot to hip high while chinch bugs damage corn in southwestern counties and barriers cannot be placed quickly enough. Oats barley and winter wheat show strength except where chinch bugs have ruined fields in the southern third of the state.
James A. Walker age 86 living northwest of West Chester was injured when his car ran off a road near Statler corner west of town. He suffered gash injuries to the head but escaped serious harm and was helped by passersby before being treated at a Washington doctor’s office and returned home.
June meeting of the Kansas City division of the Milwaukee Road service club was held at the station in Washin with twenty five in attendance. Chairman Boughtin of Haskite presided over the business session followed by a music program by the Brock brothers and Lawrence Watson. Refreshments were served and a social hour concluded the gathering with out of town members Rathbun Lin Haskins Cone and Ardon attending.
The passage notes live mines and heavy railway guns moved from the Pacific to the Atlantic side of the canal. It mentions games designed to keep the sense forces on the alert, suggesting wartime readiness and training activity in the region.
At 1 15 am on June 26 1940 Sheriff Fred Sweet and Night Marshal Aaron Bailey were shot and killed after stopping a suspect in a car theft. A major manhunt followed but failed to catch him. Desperado Jack Kiutas was later killed by Chicago police and identified posthumously by William Bailey the Washington night watch who had exchanged shots with him.
