Negro killer of officer escapes in Oklahoma

A large posse hunted Fillmore Davis after he killed Under Sheriff Guy Jarvis when arresting him on a gasolene theft charge. Despite night searches near Cleo Springs, no trace was found and guards were reinforced by state units.

Pipeline men have all gone

Local offices of the Oklahoma Contracting company have been ordered closed and the office force has left, with the last of the natural gas pipeline workers gone. The workers, once numbering over 500 in Washington, left ahead of county tests as the pipeline is prepared for use in moving gas from Texas to Chicago.

Tri-County Clergy Meet Set at Crawfordsville

Ministers from Washington Henry and Louisa counties gather at Crawfordsville for a day event starting 10 30 a m at the Presbyterian church. About 100 clergy are expected with a basket dinner after a program and planned games for all including children.

Father Decker Leaves Keota After Ten Years

Rev. Father B. J. Decker departs Keota after ten years to head St. Patrick's Church Ottumwa. He led St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception from 68 to 113 families, expanded the parochial school, added lots, and oversaw brick church progress. Parish honors him with a large outdoor banquet attended by nearly 300 people and 20 visiting priests.

Three Take Places on State Highway Board Bids July 7

Iowa bids for primary highway work total a minor schedule for July 7 in Ames. The state highway commission, re organized after three new appoinments and one re appoint ment by Gov. Dan Turner, will hear bids including one minor paving contract one grading schedule and 20.31 miles of gravel plus bridges and culverts in nine towns. Temporary Order Blocks Payment of Iowa Assembly Expense Accounts

District Judge John J. Halloran issued a temporary injunction preventing two state officials from paying expense accounts of members of the 44th Iowa General Assembly. The ruling follows arguments in a suit by George Gallarno, editor of Plain Talk, an east Des Moines weekly.

Storm lashes Lake Erie region leaving deaths and damage

A June 26 storm with cyclonic winds hail and heavy rain swept southern Lake Erie shores, causing power outages and property damage. Two youths drowned near Baycrest while another man died from lightning near Yale. Soldiers injured at Selfridge Field and several others hurt as trees fell and wires snapped across Detroit Pittsburgh and surrounding areas.

Aviators Pursue 10 Day World Record Flight

Post and Gatty left Berlin at 7 Se fm yesterday pursuing a 10 day around the world record. They planned a brief rest in Novosibirsk then continue toward Irkutsk with a possible stop at Krasnoyarsk. They fly the Trans Siberian route across northern Asia and remain cheerful despite fatigue.

Six One Indicted in Largest Midwest Liquor Ring

Sixty one persons were indicted by a federal grand jury on conspiracy to violate prohibition laws. The defendants allegedly belonged to four gangs that merged into the largest liquor syndicate in the Midwest producing and distributing about 100000 gallons of alcohol monthly across Illinois Iowa Minnesota North and South Dakota.

The official temperature hit ninety seven degrees at two o clock this afternoon. Yesterday’s high was ninety six and the day may rise a degree or two more. The low last night was seventy seven, marking the warmest night of the summer so far.

Smith Case to be Disposed in Adel Court

Final disposition of the John M. Smith case may occur in Adel district court. County Attorney George Sackett said formal charges would be filed against Smith, declared insane after state alienist exams, with the question of his sanity decided by a commission. His truck containing a burned body was found last February.

Lightning Sparks Fire at San Dimas Growers Building

A thunderstorm struck San Dimas California yesterday with lightning touching a growers association building. The bolt ignited the structure and tripped the automatic fire alarm. Fire crews arrived after rain began and the blaze was extinguished by the downpour before firefighters reached the scene.
