Houston June 26 A split over prohibition planks marks the Democratic convention as moderates and Smith forces push a compromise while dry factions demand 18th Amendment and Volstead Act text. Senate leaders Caraway Robinson Pittman Moody Daniels and Jones anchor the talks as factions brace for a contested platform and a possible minority report.
The Washington Rotary club held a memorial service for Fred West a longtime member who died last week after a brief illness. President J H Peet led the meeting with tributes from Frank Sage Win Smouse and Frank Wilson praising Wests energy tolerance progressiveness love of home town pride in family and business ability. A male quartet performed and Milwaukee railway era films closed the program.
A Southern editor extols Democratic harmony as a beautiful thing. In Philadelphia the Inquirer frames the remark with a sly nod to imagination and political theater.

New York June 26 The planned 250 million merger of Dodge Brothers Inc and the Chrysler corporation is halted by a temporary injunction granted to minority stockholders. Col Calvin Hocker Goddard of Richmond Va represents about 5 000 of 85 000 Dodge preferred shares challenging the transfer terms.
M H Feddersen resigns as Polk county agent after two years. Claude S Halderman named to replace him and relocate to Des Moines. Feddersen will head farm management for the Equitable Life Insurance company, focusing on soil building, crop marketing, and farm improvements across Iowa. Initial transition runs August to September with shared duties.
Plans for a complete remodeling of the New Graham Theatre in Graham call for removing the balcony gallery and turning the upper floor into one large balcony. The picture booth will be moved back and enlarged about threefold. New upholstered seats will replace current main floor seating, with older seats reused in the balcony. Capacity will reach about 1000 seats when finished. Work to start in a few days.

Robert W. Stewart chairman of the Indiana Standard Oil company faces a perjury indictment before the senate committee. He appeared in D C after a grand jury returned the indictment and pleaded not guilty. His attorney requested an expedited trial.
Four people died when the main building of the New England fireworks company in North Thompsonville exploded today. The blast sent wreckage into the air and sparked a fire heard for miles. Three of the victims were reported to be boys. the plant employed fewer than ten workers.
The Democratic National Convention opened in Sam Houston Hall Houston Texas with Governor Alfred E Smith of New York likely as the presidential nominee and Senator Joseph Robinson discussed as running mate. The noon session featured prayer music and the call to order with a dry planks on prohibition, while a keynote address was planned for tonight.
The American Legion drum corps business men and others plan an evening trip to Wayland and Fairfield to promote Washingtons Fourth of July celebration. Participants meet at city hall at 6 30 PM with Wayland first, then Fairfield, finishing a tour of fifteen towns. Families are urged to join for shows and local booster support.

George R. Van Namee, Smith campaign manager, predicted a brisk first ballot stampede for Governor Smith as the Democratic convention opened in Houston. He said Smith’s popularity may prevent a delay on the first ballot and cautioned against floor fights over prohibition while free speech remains a concern. Van Namee added the Smith forces have no VP preference, hoping the party will choose a candidate fit for the White House if needed.
Bids were opened in Ottumwa for a maintenance garage to house state road machinery across from the American Pearl Button plant. The 85 by 30 foot shed will have a dirt floor shop with concrete, a corrugated iron roof, and a 12 foot ceiling. An accompanying 20 by 20 foot office will have plaster walls. This is one of four statewide structures with Ottumwa as the district center, others planned at Bloomfield Fairfield and Oakaloosa. R A Frink named maintenance engineer for Washington county, with headquarters at the new plant.
