Spending 500000 Weekly On Iowa Roads
Des Moines June 25 Money now going to primary roads in Iowa totals about 500000 per week according to the state auditor’s office. Paving grading and bridge work on the primary roads are at their height statewide with the state highway commission overseeing many projects. The state treasurer will likely need weekly replenishment from the automobile fund to meet road improvement demands as the old balance is exhausted. The last legislature amended the motor vehicle law to retain automobile fees in the counties of payment but the fund balance limits complicate operations. Hard roads advocates lost a bid to make the fund a county resource. federal and state matching funds are being used alongside state funds. Ten years ago annual temporary road expenditures were significantly lower.
