Iowa to extend tough speeding crackdown in 1968 policy

DES MOINES UPI Iowa Public Safety Department plans to continue its year old crackdown on speeding. Public Safety Commissioner Jack Fulton said there will be no changes. The policy suspends licenses for driving 16 mph or more over the limit, doubled suspensions to 60 days, and began Memorial Day 1968.

Washington County entrant Patty Butler makes Miss Iowa finals

Patricia Butler, Washington County's entrant in the Miss Iowa Pageant at Davenport, finished among the ten finalists. She will crown a new Miss Washington County at the County Fair on August 5, as entries for the 1969 county contest open per sponsoring Jaycees. Westbrook Pegler Dies At 74 In Arizona

Pulitzer prize winning columnist Westbrook Pegler died at 3 30 am MDT at St Marys Hospital Tucson Arizona at age 74 after years of stomach cancer He retired five years ago and had faced feuds with Presidents F D Roosevelt and Harry Truman Pegler won the 1941 Pulitzer for exposing labor racketeers He had a long career from United Press to World War I war correspondent and sports columnist His marriages included Julia Harman Pearl Doane and Maud Towart.

All Iowa Fair sees higher beef and sheep entries in Cedar Rapids

Cedar Rapids All Iowa Fair Manager Billy Greiner announced Tuesday that beef and sheep entries have risen over the previous year. Swine entries are largely unchanged and the new open daily show drew 322 head.

Iowa Weather: Cloudy With Showers and Thunderstorms Likely

United Press International reports Iowa largely cloudy with possible showers or storms in the northeast. Tonight showers spread from the southwest with locally heavy rain in the southwest. Lows near 60 to 65-70, highs Wednesday 70s north to 80s south. Thursday outlook: showers or thunderstorms likely and a touch warmer.

Stelter optimistic on Apollo space comms ahead of moon flight

NASA communications chief Laverne Stelter spoke at the American Radio Relay League convention in Des Moines. He outlined the vast behind the scenes work, noted potential ground and design issues, and described contingencies including a possible unmanned satellite near the moon to bridge blackout periods though not yet approved.

Ten Die As Cargo Plane Crashes Into Miami District

A Dominican Airlines four engine cargo plane crashed into a busy Miami business area near the airport. Ten persons were killed and 11 injured as the aircraft tore through a medical center and an auto shop, with debris and fire spreading over two blocks. Crewmembers and several local residents died. authorities feared more bodies in the rubble.

Two Children Die In Iowa Car Train Crash

CENTERVILLE Iowa two children Larry and Colleen MacDonald were killed and their mother Janice MacDonald injured when a Milwaukee Road crossing collision near Jerome Iowa occurred. Larry was three and Colleen five. The family resided east of Centerville and the mother is hospitalized.

Relief columns reach Ben Het in major battles

Allied troops defending Ben Het inflicted heavy casualties on North Vietnamese attackers. In four battles 153 NVA were killed as a convoy brought 2,000 reinforcements and ammunition. One American was killed and six wounded. South Vietnamese allies suffered light losses.
