ROTC Duty Reduced to One Year at Iowa University

The State Board of Regents cut compulsory ROTC duty at the University of Iowa from two years to one year effective Sept. 1 1961. Men completing their first year in 1960-61 are exempt from a second year. final approval rests with the U S Defense Department. Army spokesmen note past policy favors two year compulsory or all voluntary programs.

Girl 11 Drowns In Tama Pool

An 11 year old Mesmesquakie Indian Reservation girl, Norma Jean Davenport, died from accidental drowning at the Tama Toledo swimming pool after an epileptic seizure. The Tama County medical examiner ruled the death accidental. her doctor confirmed the seizure in the water. Pool manager Joe Casey removed the body.

Girl 2 Killed by Uncle Driven Car in Fort Madison

Cindy Lee Zarodney aged two died when a car driven by her uncle Marvin McCarl rolled away from the curb as she played in the street in front of her Fort Madison home. She was the daughter of Mrs Norma Tykol.

Kennedy Plans Weekend at Middleburg Estate

President Kennedy will fly from the White House to his Middleburg Virginia estate for the weekend to recover from back ailment and illnesses. He is nearly recovered from strep throat and a virus, and has discarded crutches. He will be visited by Dr Janet Travell for penicillin injections and met with Ikeda and Stevenson before a cabinet and congressional leaders conference on Berlin.

Muscatine Man Dies in Illinois Car Crash Involving Local Man

Fred Bureume, 75, of Muscatine Iowa, died four hours after a crash near Taylor Ridge Illinois. His daughter 49 year old Mrs Ellen Morgan of Chicago was listed in critical condition. Morgan told police she may have blacked out while driving on Illinois 94 west of Taylor Ridge. Her car rear ended a truck on the highway shoulder owned by Richard Bordwell of Washington Iowa.

A 10 man Cuban prison commission sails toward the United States to open new prisoner exchange talks aboard the Costa Rican ship Arenal. State Schools Set Budgets Tap Near 56 Million

The Iowa Board of Regents approved annual budgets totaling about 56 million for three state universities and related facilities. University of Iowa 17,006,949. Iowa State University 13,474,000. Iowa State Teachers College 4,569,200, plus smaller institutions. Executive pay rises included 2,000 for top presidents boosting Hancher to 26,000 and Hilton to 26,000.

Hair Dye Disaster Ends in Burns in Kitchen Fire

Este Gumm, 27, of Cooper Iown, was hospitalized in Greene County with second degree burns to the head and neck after she used gasoline to rinse dyed hair. Her daughter lit a stove burner, igniting the fumes as Gumm rolled outside to extinguish the flames.

254 Register For Library Program

Washingtons Public Library reports 254 children enrolled in the annual summer Reading Program with daily attendance 136 to 165.
