The CIO United Steelworkers prepare around the clock bargaining to avert a June 30 strike after rejecting U S Steel’s offer of about 10 cents an hour. President McDonald calls the proposal inadequate and discriminatory, while U S Steel cites a 22 cent rise for top jobs and 6.5 cent for lower brackets.
Iowa Agriculture Secretary Clyde Spry appointed two and reappointed seven members to the Iowa Dairy Industry Commission for two-year terms effective July 1. Appointed were Fred Wheeler of Sibley and James T. Anderson of Hancock. Reappointed were Howard Waters of Danville, Robert Sage of Davenport, Ralph Keeling of Des Moines, Lynn Thompson of Clarion, Ervin Dieterick of Saint Ansgar, Laurence Hammerly of Newton, and Cowin Peer of Algona.
In Salisbury Southern Rhodesia doctors report four of Judith Tandzeni's quintuplets are alive and healthy after a 100 mile journey from Mtoko. The two girls Marie and Pauline weigh 3 pounds each while the two boys Sophia and Alios weigh 3 pounds 6 ounces and 2 pounds 6 ounces. One infant died during transport.
Waterloo reports hundreds of cats delivered to Newcomb's Black Hawk Kennels after handbills offered $5 per cat. Owner Miles Newcomb suspects unclear origin as volunteers claimed cats for dog training. Cats arrived from up to 20 miles away, prompting police to note many pets missing.
A car traveling about 100 mph struck a semi-trailer near Rockville Indiana. Flames engulfed the wreck, killing six people including three from Hammond and the car’s driver Carl Barnett and his two children. Firefighters battled the blaze. two bodies remained unidentified.
A University of Iowa law student from Davenport sued patrolman James W. Guritz and the city of Iowa City for 7500 dollars alleging assault and illegal arrest. The complaint says Guritz punched him, injuring teeth lips and face and detaining him four hours after an April 16 arrest for disorderly conduct.
Amon G. Carter 76, famed Fort Worth Star Telegram publisher and philanthropist, died at his Fort Worth home. He built Fort Worth into a national center of influence, earning the title Mr. Fort Worth amid vast oil wealth and public works. His life spanned from a Texas farm boy to a renowned media figure. He had suffered heart attacks in 1953 but remained active, attending industry meetings in New York as late as April.
Elsie Hetherington age 87 died at 3:15 a.m. today at the United Presbyterian home where she had lived since April 22 1952 after moving from Cedar Rapids. Born November 21 1867 in Atalissa Iowa her body was taken to Sherman's funeral home and will be sent to Cedar Rapids for services and interment.

Charles Langles, 65, of Marengo was killed when a semi trailer truck struck the rear of his tractor on U S 6, 44 miles east of Marengo. Truck driver Donald J. Wellner, 29, of Waterloo, escaped injury.
Gov. Leo A. Hoegh announced immediate appointments to the Iowa Toll Road Authority. Frederick J. Day, Willis D. Piper, and Ed Frick will serve two, four, and six year terms respectively. Piper is a Democrat. the others are Republicans. A fifth member will be chosen by the State Highway Commission after July 1. The three Hoegh appointees will receive twenty dollars per meeting plus expenses. The authority may issue up to 180 million dollars in bonds to build an east west toll road from Davenport to Council Bluffs along the U S 6 corridor. The authority awaits neighboring state action before proceeding. The governor also reappointed mine inspectors William Jervis and T Clarence Chapman and named Aldin E Morehouse to the barber examiners board, all effective July 1.
