American shock troops breached the Cherbourg perimeter and reached within about a mile of the city as German resistance faded. Hundreds surrendered as U S air forces pounded forts Cay Route and Docteville in a saturation assault signaling a rapid German morale collapse.
Barbara Anna Spiegel 14 of Waterloo died in a Cedar Falls hospital from injuries after a motorcycle was struck by a car on Highway 218 two miles east of Cedar Falls. The car fled the scene as Robert Cook 17 of Waterloo reported the other vehicle did not stop. Police hunt the 1929 sedan driver. Spiegel suffered four left leg fractures along with cuts and shock. Cook's leg was bruised. They were returning from a swimming pool visit.
Simpson College in Indianola announced a $100000 gift from the Gardner Cowles Foundation of Des Moines to fund a new science building. The structure will memorialize Dr. George Washington Carver, a 1894 alumnus who later taught at Tuskegee and promoted agricultural uses of sweet potatoes and peanuts. President B. E. Voigt said construction will start at once.
ACKLEY Mrs. Leah Tool 100 widow of a Civil War veteran died at her home here Friday from complications of illness. Born in Harrisburg Pennsylvania she came to Ackley with her husband Albert Tool in 1867. He died in 1904. Five children survive.
The Iowa AAA committee reports 21,547,498 bushels of corn for industrial war use under the sales freeze that expired at midnight Friday. Delivered and contracted since the WE A ban began last April 25 include 14,994,485 bushels delivered and 6,363,013 bushels under contract as of Tuesday.
Neal Hammer chamber secretary reports from Frank McCreary of Safety Bus Lines that a Newton to Marshalltown route will start about July 1. The Iowa Commerce Commission approval and Office of Defense Transportation permission pave the way for three daily round trips via Laurel.
Dr. John H. Burlingame, a Cherokee, Iowa physician and Civil War veteran, was presented with a 1273 dollar check by an insurance company after outliving the policy expectancy. He served Cherokee as mayor and practiced medicine for 47 years.
Thomas C. Clark of Wayland and Kathleen Jackson of Kalona obtained a marriage license at the courthouse yesterday.
Iowa's spring 1944 pig crop shows a 19 percent drop in brood sows from a year earlier and a 22 percent smaller spring pig crop due to a cold wet season. Farmers kept 1 988 000 sows and saved about 11 829 000 pigs at 5.95 per litter, below last year's record but above the ten year average.
About 14 000 detasselers are needed for 73 000 acres of hybrid corn in Iowa. The major detasseling period is July 16 to August 16. Half the volunteers are recruited. 7 000 more must enroll in three weeks. Haupt counties list Humboldt Renton Carroll Mahaska Page as leading acreages. Labor shortages affect farming and haying precedes corn cultivation. Townspeople organized in Twilight Harvest Leagues to aid food production.
Washington county school superintendents and their families gathered at Sunset park for a informal picnic in honor of H. V. Snodgrass who will leave Kalona to head Sigourney schools. No formal program or business was held. attendees enjoyed frying and eating hamburgers.
It was announced at the Y this morning that the swimming pool will be closed next Monday and Tuesday for a periodical cleaning. A cake and home made ice cream event was also noted. All the superintendents except Riverside were present, along with County Supt. Lester B. Krabill.
County candidates have until July 6 to file election expense accounts with the county auditor. Most spent little, with Arthur Wiley reporting 59.24 mainly for newspaper ads, Clarence Fulton 45.41, and E. S. Rudolph 13.20. H. P. Wilson has not yet filed. Chairman G E Mace of the Washington county war finance committee says reports are arriving from the fifth war loan sign up in county townships. Highland township led by James Swailes and Seventy-six township led by Walter J Reed have begun canvassing with more to follow as the drive heats up. English River township will be canvassed next Tuesday by Kalona business men when stores close. Reports continue from Marion Jackson Cedar Franklin and Washington townships as well as Washington women canvassers.

Frank H. Daly Ottumwa Social Security office manager will hold personal sessions at the Washington post office at 9 00 a m on Thursday June 29. Widows of workers and servicemen should apply promptly for benefits and the elderly or retired should inquire about monthly retirement insurance. Daly notes limited office forces and travel funds allow visits in Washington only once a month, with inquiries and claims still reaching the Ottumwa field office at 108 East Third Street.
Allied air forces massed hundreds of planes across the channel to support Cherbourg siege operations and strike German communication lines in France while American bombers from Italy hit the Ploesti oil fields in Romania for the second straight day. Swarms of fighters and heavy bombers faced clear windless conditions as they attacked targets, possibly planned launch sites in Pas de Calais, with Berlin radio reporting attacks in northwestern Germany.
The Washington county orthopedic clinic will convene Thursday June 29 in the offices of the Washington county health unit. The service, a cooperative effort of the County Medical Society state services for crippled children and the county health unit, offers consultation to physicians on pediatric orthopedic conditions. Mrs Roy B Downs 60 died this afternoon at her home 702 East Jefferson after several months illness. Her body was taken to Sherman’s funeral home where funeral arrangements are being made.
