Harlan report states Mr Edith Peter son will receive 200 dollars in damages after he signs an unconditional release for injuries from a fall east of the courthouse last winter. The city council passed a resolution approving the settlement.
Cedar Rapids police and Linn county officers seized nine pints and three quarts of liquor bearing state stamps during a raid on the G. B Lazio fruit store. Detectives charged Lazio with lacking a liquor permit.
Augustine Murrelo a Mexican national was arrested by Cedar Rapids police on a complaint from immigration inspector Sigurdson who says Murrelo is accused of illegally entering the United States.
DES MOINES Iowa the unemployment compensation commission says fewer than one in a thousand unemployment benefit recipients have used misrepresentation or fraud since benefits began two years ago over 76 000 workers have qualified for aid and the commission notes it is nearly impossible to draw benefits while employed without detection.
Phil Sundby, local rep for the Federal Surplus Commodities Corp, reports Polk County distributed 78361.50 in food stamps during the first 15 days of June. The total covers both general orange stamps and blue surplus stamps provided to aid recipients.
Three masked men with bandannas and gloves staged two robberies at residences hosting card parties in Ord Iowa. They stole a total of $35. Detectives weighed a possible link to three Soviets who escaped Fort Madison prison but found no positive ID.
Edwin Novotny aged two drowned on his father’s Cedar Rapids farm. His body was discovered in a water tank behind the barn by his sister Martha, 10, who had been sent to search for him by their father.
University of Iowa facilities are offered to the U S commissioner of education for training over 200 students in specialized mechanical engineering courses. The college aims to bolster aeronautics and mechanized warfare readiness as part of the defense program.
The Republican National Convention opened in Philadelphia with Governor Harold Stassen of Minnesota named temporary chairman to deliver the keynote speech at 8 15 p m central time. Delegates debated Willkie opposition as Dewey Taft and Willkie top candidates while 100 congressmen formed a Stop Willkie group.
The Co operative Service company on North Marion avenue reports a 54 inch tall corn field in the north end of town. J E Gardner touts it as the finest in town while the south 40 acres were retired under a conservation program with government payments. The north 40 will be harvested and sealed, tied to the Festicorn program near the service station.
Wilbur Long arrived back in Ottumwa after an over Sunday visit with relatives. He came to see his mother Mrs. C. W. Long Jr who is seriously ill in Washington county hospital.
County agent J W Chandler announced plans for the annual county wide beef and swine club tour to be held next Wednesday June 26. Club members parents and friends may join all or part of the tour which begins at the Farm Bureau office at 7 am A noon basket dinner will be served at the Lloyd Foster home east of Jackson Center school. Ed Lyndegaard will assist with judging and the results will help select the state fair judging team.
In Washington at West Madison Street and South Avenue D the new Voice of Prophecy auditorium hosts the evangelistic campaign led by C. L. Vories. He emphasizes Bible teaching over fundraising and presents Daniel's prophecies about future kingdoms and end times. Music starts at 7:30 p.m.
Three automobile accidents were reported with no injuries. Near Havre Marion Reeves veered into a ditch causing about 190 dollars in damage. Everett Snider ditched a car after the engine failed with about 45 dollars damage. Clarence Burkholder and Joe Kos collided causing about 50 dollars damage.
County Attorney Richard A. Stewart filed a county attorney's information charging rape against Marion Ginkens of Righton. Judge J. G. Patterson fixed bonds at $10,000, the same as set in justice court three weeks ago. Judge Patterson left Washington and plans to return July 8 after a brief court session.
The DeMolays will install officers at their regular meeting this evening at o o'clock in the Masonic Temple. All Masons are invited to attend. The DeMolay Mothers circle will also meet beginning at 8 o'clock.

Representative Martin Dies of Texas said in Chicago that the Midwest is a hotbed of fifth column activity. He claimed his agents found 40 or 50 members across three German and two Italian organizations and issued subpoenas.
President Roosevelt arrives in Washington to sign laws funding defense and a 750 billion dollar armament program. The Navy plans contracts for 68 new warships, marking a major step in rearmament.
Automobile sales in Washington County show a pickup with eleven new cars registered at the county treasurer’s office last week. Total 1940 license plates reach 5,453, about 1,090 above last year, while trucks total 838 versus 726 a year ago. New registrations include B. Dougherty, Washington. Noah D. Beer, Wellman. Glenn E. Wilson, Washington. Alice M. Eimen, Kalona. Jean McIntosh, Wellman. Carl Kos, Riverside. Joe E. Chihak, Ainsworth. G. F. Foster, Washington. Leroy Lopshire, Armstrong. Idelia A. Bakke, Washington. S. B. Watson, Washington.
France and Italy signed an armistice ending fighting that began when Italy entered the war two weeks earlier. Hostilities were to cease six hours after signing, with the fate of the French fleet still unclear. British and French sources reported continued resistance plans outside metropolitan France and French efforts to carry on in Africa the Near East and Indochina. The German advance pressed into western and southern France as armistice talks continued.
Rev. H J Corcoran marked his twenty fifth year in the priesthood with a high mass at St James Church attended by Bishop H P Rohlman and 43 visiting priests. The event featured a dinner, community singing, and a reception on the church lawn hosted by the parish. Corcoran was ordained in Ireland on June 25, 1915 and served as pastor and editor upon coming to Iowa.
