Mrs. Bessie E. Barker of Washington, an agent for Bankers' Life of Iowa, was honored by the Ottumwa Association of Life Underwriters for persistency in business. Nine other state residents received similar recognition.
Washington lawmakers clash over a standby draft bill enabling inductions only when Congress is out of session. House GOP members insist on the house version and control of start powers, while Truman nears signing a stopgap extending current law 15 days past expiry.
Senator Pat McCarran said the senate will likely refuse to confirm Carrol O. Switzer as a federal district judge for Iowa. He noted state objections usually prevent confirmation when a home-state senator opposes, despite some multi state circuit approvals.
Defense Secretary Louis Johnson told Far East nations the United States would do everything needed for American security and world peace. Dr Sidney Weinbaum a Russian born Caltech scientist faces eight counts of perjury and fraud from a federal grand jury indictment. He allegedly denied communist party membership while working on a secret Army jet project and later learned the charges after an army employment review board inquiry. He was arrested in Pasadena and released on a five thousand dollar bond.
President Truman vetoed a bill that would grant World War II veterans who joined the postal field after the war full credit for military service for promotion and salary. The measure would have provided $100 per year of service, but the president cited four weaknesses and argued it violated promotion standards based on performance.
Funeral services were held at 2 PM Thursday at the United Presbyterian church with Rev. George Kerr and Rev. F. W. Eastwood leading. Arrangements were by Sherman’s funeral home, and burial followed at Elm Grove cemetery. Priscilla and Independent Clubs attended in a group. GUAM AP A rescue boat reported nine survivors from the crash of a U S air force B 29 in the Pacific. Two crewmen remained missing. Eight men were found aboard two life boats 140 miles southeast of Guam with another survivor rescued from the water. Search planes had located life rafts earlier in the day.

The Publishers' association urged craft unions to order their members back to work at the strike bound New York World Telegram and Sun. Replies to telegrams to international presidents were awaited as publishers warned a paper could appear if lines were crossed. The World Telegram and Sun did not publish for the tenth day with no publication planned for the next day.
