Wellman Robbery Case Yields Five Year Reformatory Sentence
Late yesterday Judge Frank Bechly presided over a brief criminal court session issuing sentences to two men who pled guilty to intent to commit robbery and to maintaining a blue nuisance. Lynn Butterbaugh, a Wellman youth, received a sentence not exceeding five years in the men’s reformatory at Anamosa for assault with intent to rob a 17 year old girl, Martha Godlove, who was returning from McGugin drug store. Butterbaugh seized her purse containing about 1.50 before his capture. Arthur Allen, connected with the assault, was released when not tied to the crime. John Powell of Brighton pled guilty to maintaining a liquor nuisance and was fined 500 and jailed three months, or 1.55 a day if the fine is unpaid. Civil case details were continued.
