Mt Vernon Men Use Sulphuric Acid on Canada Thistles

Dr H W Lewis of Cornell College Mt Vernon Iowa reports a 1st year trial controlling Canada thistle on J D Peet farm. Three patches totaling 500 2000 and 16000 plants were treated with concentrated sulfuric acid dropped on the stalk before flowering. Most plants died by summer and spring regrowth was minimal. The method costs about ten cents a pound in acid and requires prompt neutralization if skin contact occurs. The process favors late spring treatment and follow up two weeks later.
