Taft returns to Yale for his class reunion and ends up chief guest at commencement. He attends corporate meetings, receives cheers, dons a doctor of laws robe, and is escorted by Yale faculty and his brother Morace D Taft. In Des Moines, J A T Tinll leads in the congressional primary recount, Hull narrowing Prouty’s edge.
Secretary Taft addresses students on women as witnesses with a cautionary note about intuition on cross examination. He attends an informal class reunion at Edwards House, recalled college days as “Big Bill,” and joins led by Reggie Bowen in earlier class feats. He later dedicates Ledyard memorial at Yale campus and plans to attend Yale-Harvard game before traveling to Oyster Bay for talks with the president.
Chicago June 23 Governor John A Johnson of Minnesota refuses use of his name as Democratic vice presidential candidate. The announcement comes from Johnson headquarters at the Grand Pacific hotel.
Des Moines June 23 Polk county delegation to the Democratic state convention is ready to present the name of Hon Jerry Sullivan of Des Moines as a candidate for the nomination for vice president.
Columbus Ohio June 25 Attorney General Wade Ellis who has arrived from Cincinnati is preparing a statement in reply to what William J Bryan and other critics of the Chicago platform have said.
In Cadillac Michigan on June 23 Fred Cooper the sole survivor of a family killed last week underwent brain surgery to relieve pressure. A drainage tube was placed and doctors reported equal chances for life. He does not yet know the cause of his injury.
Mme Anna Gould and Prince Helle de Sagan travel to England for a wedding. Over the next two weeks Boston clubs host meetings on various social topics during the General Federation of Women's Clubs convention.
In Washington on June 28 Frederick Hyde and Joost Schneider were found guilty on most counts, while John Benson and Henry Dimond were acquitted on all counts. Benson and Dimond released. Hyde and Schneider bail increased to 20 000 and 12 500. Deliberations lasted about seventy five hours with a prior disagreement. Sentencing deferred for Hyde and Schneider who may appeal within four days. The case centers on 100 000 acres of public land in the far west.
Judge Phillips of the common pleas court orders Municipal Traction company to provide consistent service and maintain the three-cent fare, ensuring equal rates for riders. The ruling mandates adherence to the established fare and service standards in Cleveland.
In Hemphill area of Sabine county a mob killed nine Black men after two white men were slain by Black individuals. The dead include Jerry Evans Will Johnson Mose Spellman Cleve land Williams William Manual Frank Williams and two unidentified men. Tension rises as both races arm themselves amid a predicted clash. Earlier, Hugh Dean and others visited a Black church and dance. Dean was killed and six Black people were jailed for the killings. Also, Aaron M. Johnson, a prominent farmer, was shot dead at his dining table. the killer fired through a window.
Chicago report notes Christian Burcky died at his home on 6000 Indiana Avenue. He built wealth starting from a boxcar lunch counter with Ed Milan, pledging to make a million. They later ran Chicago's original first class restaurant, achieving their goal by 1888 and then retiring.
Frederick J. Immel, former Columbus board of public works member linked to the East Broad street case, pleaded guilty to accepting a bribe from H. C. Lang of Cleveland Trinidad Paving. Judge Rathmell sentenced him to four years in the Ohio penitentiary and a $1,000 fine.

In Elwood Indiana on June 23 Harry Good, twelve, died after being struck by lightning while indoors with his mother and five siblings. He looked toward a blinding flash, collapsed, and life ended before his mother could reach him. no others were injured.
A son was born to Queen Victoria of Spain in Madrid last night. Queen Victoria, formerly Princess Ena of Battenburg, and King Alfonso were married in Madrid on May 31, 1908. Their first son was born on May 10, 17.

Six lepers have been cured at the Leper Home of Louisiana, with one discharged as cured and five nearly well, per the biennial report to the Louisiana assembly. The report notes gains come from sanitary surroundings and first class medical care, not a new cure.
