Washington High Jazz Band departs for Montreux with plaque
The Washington High School Jazz Band left this morning for Cedar Rapids to fly to Montreux Switzerland carrying a Washington plaque. The plaque, prepared by the Chamber of Commerce, bears the city insignia and an engraved message greeting Montreux for the June 23 to 28 1972 Montreux Jazz Festival.

Inmate gets 30 more years for prison guard stabbing
Samuel Parras, 53, was sentenced to an additional 30 years in Fort Madison for assault with intent to commit murder after stabbing corrections officer Joseph Chulte in February. Chulte, hospitalized 84 days with abdominal wounds, was attacked while delivering a tray.

Supreme Court bars districts from resegregating via new units

Agnes floods the Northeast as storm hits Washington area
Tropical storm Agnes drenched the eastern seaboard with up to a foot of rain. Berserk gunman kills six in New Jersey office
Edwin Grace, a 12 guard from New York City, opened fire in the Heritage Building in Cherry Hill, killing six men and wounding six others before a self-inflicted gunshot ended the spree.
