Four Firms Destroyed in Fort Madison Fire
A Wednesday blaze in Fort Madison destroyed the Hawkeye Lumber Co office and yard the Superior 400 station and the Watson Distributing Co beer warehouse and damaged the Midwest Wax Paper Co Cushman Auto Parts and Rahn Used Car lot in a two hour fire. Firefighters from several towns aided. Damaging fire spared some structures but caused evacuations and injuries to a firefighter.

Two Iowa men Carl Otto Hartmen Jr. of Le Mars and Leonard Ralph Zwann of Okoboji were killed when their light plane crashed in a field near Tyler Minnesota. The craft had departed Huron South Dakota and went down at about 7 30 a m after perhaps striking a power line. Witness Nick Peters of Elkton South Dakota saw the crash as the overcast hung heavy. The plane skidded 150 yards and the engine detached, continuing another 135 yards.
