Specialize for Sure Farm Profit Warns Livestock Census

Thousands of punch cards from Farm Census IBM machines reveal a warning to livestock farmers: specialize to stay viable. The old jack of all trades model fades as farms shrink to efficient units. Hog farms drop from 4.85 million in 1920 to 2.365 million in 1954, a 51 percent decline. Cattle farms also rise in numbers, yet overall farming shifts toward specialization and fewer producers.

Trends in Farm Sizes and Sheep Production Since 1920

The article notes sheep numbers dropping from 539000 in 1920 to 361000 in 1954 and crop up in efficiency with 35 percent fewer farm workers producing 60 percent more farm products than three decades earlier. It attributes the declines to the disappearance of small, inefficient units and the rise of profitable, larger-scale farming driven by economics.

Disease Free Pigs Curb Disease Cycle

A veterinary study reports a method to stop disease spread in swine by using disease-free newborn piglets raised in isolated quarters. Pigs are obtained by Cesarean delivery or sterile bag catching and kept away from environmental pathogens, with evidence suggesting newborn piglets can be raised without colostrum under protection.

Fruit Saver Bird Barrier From Light Sheet Metal

An assembled three piece device keeps birds off fruit trees with hinged movement in wind. The full body contour piece and two half body shapes without ears form a guard. A casual comparison suggests a "WHITE ELEPHANT" to some, a good buy to others. Basement or attic surplus sale note.
