Roger Degrange and Walter Brassard, truck drivers, quickly doused a truck fire by reaching for the soda pop they were hauling and pouring it on the blaze.
At a White House conference Attorney General Herbert Brownell Jr. pressed Republican leaders to advance Communist control bills pending in both houses. Senate and House leaders Halleck and Knowland pledged to expedite action while noting no rush for a special session. Leaders expect most appropriations and key programs to pass by June 30 with farm policy tied to Eisenhower’s gradualism plan.
A study by Dr E Cuyler Hammond and Dr Daniel Horn for the American Cancer Society cites increased cancer deaths among regular male smokers aged 50 to 70, up to 75 percent higher than non smokers. The nine state study covers nearly 200 000 adults but notes women may show different patterns due to lower smoking rates.
A semi-trailer driven by Richard R. Picken of Omaha veered off the county home road between West Chester and Washington at 5 50 p.m. and toppled into a ditch. The truck carried frozen beer and was damaged, with $6 estimated. Wreckers freed the vehicle in about an hour and the refrigerating unit kept the cargo from spoiling.
At the Geneva Far Eastern conference the Chinese said 14 U S airmen and one missionary are dead or presumed dead among 12 Americans detained, with 15 airmen in jail. They added 30 in prison, 12 unaccounted for, and two who left June 18. The U S seeks their release and clarification.
Five Washington county youths attended the state Junior Red Cross training center at the 4-H camp grounds in Boone this week. They will return Saturday June 26. Mrs. Ellis Rickey is on the staff. Young people attending are.
President Eisenhower invites Republican and Democratic leaders to the White House for a briefing by Undersecretary Walter Bedell Smith on the Geneva conference. Smith arrived from Europe and will discuss the Far East talks and the Korean issue with the President and Secretary of State Dulles.
The annual Washington county residents picnic will be held Saturday June 26 at 6 p.m. in the Union Park log house Des Moines. All former residents are invited to attend with items for a cooperative supper. Reservations through Mrs. C N Brodrick 2304 North Union St Des Moines.
Senate Republican Leader Knowland forecasts a defeat for Democratic efforts to add general income tax relief to the administration tax reform bill. He cites expected Democratic support on some proposals but predicts a hassle and says GOP leaders expect only limited cross votes to secure defeat.
Riverside Charles V. Dautremont Sr died at home in Riverside after a three week illness. Funeral services set for Tuesday at 9 a.m. at St Mary's Catholic Church Riverside with burial in St Olivet Cemetery. Rosary scheduled for 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. He served as Riverside postmaster 1916 to 1924 and later custodian of St Mary's. Survivors include wife Nettie Wieland Dautremont, one daughter Mrs Dorothy Fitzsimmons, four sons Norbert James Emer Clem Adrian, six brothers, three sisters, and fourteen grandchildren. He was born Feb 26 in Washington County.
Frank Thompson of Ainsworth Phyllis Lowe of Crawfordsville Janice Gosche and Karen Debbler of Wellman and Ruth Ann Brown of Washington were taken to camp by Mrs Wilbur Thompson and Winnie Beller county Red Cross secretary.
Torrential rains swelled rivers in Fort Dodge Webster City Sioux City Mason City and Des Moines leaving one fatality and evacuating over 100 families. Des Moines River rose beyond flood stage as highways flooded and four inches drenched Mason City isolating it. Fluent rescues continue along the Floyd Boone and Lime creeks with levees tested and a guard alerted.

Pioneer Rexall drug store proprietor Stanly Zager removed all comic books from the newsstand effective today after local groups met Friday to discuss keeping objectionable comics from children. He chose full removal rather than sorting which titles might be objectionable.
Mrs. John Zion 78 of Wapello and formerly Columbus Junction died Saturday at Bellevue hospital Muscatine. Services set for 2 p.m. Tuesday in Wapello with burial in Columbus City cemetery. She moved from Columbus City to Wapello after her husband John Zion’s death 15 years ago. The couple lived on a farm southwest of Columbus City before moving to the William Dunn home between Columbus Junction and Columbus City, where they ran a large apple orchard. Several nieces and nephews survive.
Russell Wimber 29 Des Moines was held without charge after his brother Ross 40 died after an altercation in a tavern. Detectives said witnesses reported Russell struck Ross who slumped to the floor. Coroner cited brain hemorrhage as the cause with doubt if the blow was direct cause.
Four people died in Iowa incidents over the weekend including Denzel Montgomery 36 New Virginia who drowned while trying to save his daughter Marilyn Montgomery 11 after she slipped into a pond. Race driver George B Tyler Jr 246 Fort Des Moines died from injuries from a Chariton track crash. Alfred Anderson 1ke Dows drowned in the Iowa River while rescuing a neighbor's cattle. Harrell Wilson 20 Red Oak died from injuries after a car hit a pole near Bedford.
James McCabe and Don Smith of Mr. Pleasant visited Washington for several hours. McCabe is the Democratic nominee for State Senator from Washington and tenry Counties. Smith is his campaign manager.
A sharp thunderstorm dropped 0.26 inches of rain in Washington Sunday night. Strong winds, heavy lightning and thunder accompanied the shower, coming after a season high of 95 degrees reached Sunday afternoon.
Howard La Rue 34, former wrestler in southeast Iowa, suffered the loss of his left leg below the hip after a switch engine ran over him in Muscatine Rock Island Railroad yard. Hospital attendants said the injury required amputation. La Rue was a well known wrestler in the region years ago.
New York Republican leaders backed by Eisenhower aides urged Gov. Thomas E. Dewey to run for a fourth term after he told friends he planned retirement and a return to law practice. GOP Chairman Dean P. Taylor planned a noon meeting to discuss the governor's political future and whether he would lead the ticket in November.
