Des Moines officials report a survey of 6 966 automobiles shows an average of 2.68 passengers per car across industrial plants. High averages noted at Des Moines ordnance plant homeward run and others including Burlington plant Collins Radio Cedar Rapids.
Ottumwa pilot Cadet Gardiner 23 of Tourmont suffered a head cut when his plane crashed after striking a wet line near Eddyville. The crash temporarily shut off power in the area fourteen miles west of Ottumwa. Gardiner walked to a road to report the accident to the naval air station where he trains, according to the public relations office.
Elsie Hopkins 40 of 801 E Fourteenth Des Moines sues Vern Hopkins 42 truck driver of Clive for another divorce after four marriages and three divorces between them. They wed first Sept 9 1919 in Des Moines and last remarried Aug 8 1934 in Chicago. One son James L Hopkins 22 in the armed forces.
Vernon Garly 61 of Dumont, Butler County supervisor, died after a fall at the Rose Bowl tavern in Des Moines about 12:45 AM Friday. Coroner rules no inquest. death due to a skull fracture from slipping down a steep flight of stairs. Barry Karly died two hours later at Broadlawns General Hospital.
The Quaker Oats Co. large Cedar Rapids cereal mill became the fifth Cedar Rapids war industry to win the Army E award Friday night. Brig. Gen Joseph Barzynski presented the pennant after ceremonies led by N Elliott. Douglas Stuart, Chicago president, pledged employee cooperation.

About 40 of 60 men from the headquarters company of the first regiment Iowa State Guard will depart early Sunday for Camp Dodge. The unit, led by Captain Howard Miller, will train for two weeks with officers Lieutenants Kephart and Arnold and several sergeants and privates accompanying.
