A column notes the arrest of Louise Joles, described as a gypsy woman, for obtaining 600 dollars from Kolbein Akre of Highlandville Ir through false pretenses. The information was filed by her husband Louis Joles.
Mt Ayr Iowa authorities report Delmar Gibson 17 of Lees Summit Mo escaped from Ringgold county jail early Sunday after sawing through a cell window. He reentered the courthouse via skylight and left through a lower story window. Gibson was jailed for a concealed weapon charge and shot Frank Davidson 67 of Des Moines in a freight boxcar. Davidson was wounded in the hip and Gibson said the shooting was accidental.
Alexander Victor Animatograph Co. of Davenport and New York announces final preparations for large scale production of a motion picture machine that records sound on film as it passes through the camera, enabling talking pictures or talkies to be made during filming.
Iowa's Rainbow division men gathered on Camp Dodge parade grounds Sunday for a champagne toast to three retiring Iowa National Guard officers. Maj. Gen. Mathew A. Tinley led the 168th Infantry in World War campaigns and retired from active service. Brig. Gen. Lloyd D. Ross and Col. Charles Tillotson, both of Des Moines, were honored by the men they commanded.
Bernard Daniels 21 drowned Sunday at Morse Lake six miles west of Belmond where he went with a youth group to swim. Witnesses say a diving raft broke loose and drifted. Daniels panicked and fought rescuers Bud Packard and Merle Bonte who swam to help him before he disappeared beneath the water.
Two hundred air enthusiasts gathered for a breakfast at the Aviation Country Club in Cedar Rapids with 55 planes in attendance. A minor crash injured no one when W Lootke of Davenport Iowa forced landing after takeoff. his craft tore both wings in a potato patch near a telegraph pole. Guests were served twenty two dozen eggs as ships arrived from Chicago Monroe and Burlington.
Thomas J. Runyan, serving a life sentence in an Iowa prison for murder, will be moved to Winona Minnesota tonight for trial on robbing the Eyota Savings Bank in 1936. Federal officials and Governor Wilson approved the transfer. the Eyota bank was insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Runyan pleaded guilty March 9, 1939, to killing James Zrostlick in 1925 after a road confrontation.
Street Commissioner Blaine Holmes and city workers halted by forenoon rain while outlining parking spaces on Washington streets. This year lines will be yellow and shorter to indicate stalls, not full spaces. Councilmen tested angled parking and one hour limit last Saturday, to judge feasibility this evening.
Ralph Boziman took ownership of the Arnold barber shop from Rodney Arnold. The shop, among the oldest under the same management in Washington, will keep current staff Don Hazen and Ralph McCreedy with Mr. Borman joining as third barber. Arnold owns the health-related reasons for selling and plans to work for Central Life Assurance later.
Des Moines reports 40 percent collection of inheritance tax with $3,882 paid on the Smouse Estate. State treasurer announced the tax collection and noted the amount.
John Chez, born in Bohemia May 16 1861, died Sunday evening at 7 at his niece's home in Richmond. Survived by sister Anna Musil and brother Joseph Chez. brothers Frank and Anthony predeceased. half brother Wendl Chez. Funeral set for Tuesday at 3 PM at the M K church in Richmond.
About 25 members of Company K Washington military unit and their families attended a picnic in Chau tauqua park at Columbus Junction yesterday. The next reunion and officers election will take place at Fort Madison on January 15. Members recruited from Columbus Junction and Fort Madison after 1917 war deployment attended.
Melvin Carl is jailed in Washington county on a larceny from a dwelling charge. Authorities allege items valued over 20 dollars were taken, with possible penitentiary time if convicted. Carl, last seen in Montana, surfaced in Oskaloosa and is said to have passed a forged check there. He was turned over to Washington officers after an arrest in Oskaloosa, with arraignment planned before Judge Beechly in mid June. Rex Nickerson, wanted for forgery, was arrested and bound over to the grand jury after a preliminary hearing for forging his father's signature on a check.
The will of Winfield Smouse of Washington leaves the bulk of a 112542 estate to town property and farm land with Jessie B. Dougherty listed as beneficiary of the entire estate.
Mrs. Bunny Blair who had been visiting in Galesburg NL for ten days returned home Saturday afternoon.
Rainfall totaled 1.70 inches from last night to today with 0.80 inches in the night. A prior heat wave ending as a cool wind and rain moved temperatures down from the nineties. Four days reached 90 plus during the recent heat period, including a Saturday of 95 degrees.

Funeral services for David Miller who died suddenly Saturday at 3 PM were held at his home at 1 30 and at 2 PM in Sugar Creek cemetery. Burial followed on the Sugar Creek grounds. Miller died while helping his daughter in law pick strawberries at his son Dallas Miller’s home five miles east of Wayland. He had recent heart trouble treated at University hospital Iowa City. Born October 9 1872 in Holmes County Ohio he moved to Wayland in 1919. He had two marriages and five children with two predeceased. He is survived by his wife Emma Miller and four stepchildren, two sons Oscar and Dallas, one daughter Mrs Will Miller of Fredericksburg Ohio, siblings in Ohio, and seven grandchildren.

Lightning struck a barn on the Tom Bailey farm near Anita Iowa killing ten milk cows and one horse. The barn was destroyed as Bailey and his wife had just left to tend crying children during the storm. Many wire lines were also down from the storm.
Des Moines bulletin reports Col. L. D. James of Fairfield Col. B. B. Bush of Ames and Private James W. Hieckenbottom of Morning Sun were slightly injured when their station wagon collided with another car. Col. James suffered three broken ribs and a broken collar bone. He was hospitalized for observation but not badly hurt. Also aboard were Lt. Col. James Owen of Iowa.

The supervised community playground on South Fourth Avenue will open tomorrow after today’s rain delay. Director George Mohr says hours are 9 to 12 in the morning and 1 to 4 30 in the afternoon. He invites parents from all over town to bring their children and notes Ruth Dupuis has stories and games planned for the kids.
The Washington county Legion and Auxiliary hold a joint session in Wellman on Tuesday night June 20 at 8. The nominating committee led by Morrow Birrer Vodicka Love Morgan and Squire will present two nominee slates before the rain meeting. The Wellman post plans a program dancing and a feed at Oakwood dance pavilion. the Brighton gathering drew wide county turnout.
