At the 1908 Republican National Convention in Chicago Taft captured the presidency on the first ballot with a near unanimous vote. The vice presidential race stirred drama as Lodge ordered a state by state roll call amid roaring crowds and chaotic scenes.
A vast amphitheater trembled with anticipation as Burton nominated Taft. Philadelphia June 18 Attorney General Bonaparte for the government and John G. Johnson of Philadelphia representing the railroads closed the arguments in the proceedings to restrain coal carrying railroads from moving coal from mines in Pennsylvania in which they are financially interested to points outside the state.
New York June 19 Agents of ocean steamship companies report continued low freight traffic to Europe with no relief in sight. Since the start of the year there has been a steady drop in freights and several lines have cut ships or moved them to other ports.
Hot Springs Virginia June 18 Representative A A Wiley of Alabama dies at a hotel aged about fifty. He served in Cuba as General Lawtons chief of staff and as civil governor of the eastern province and sat in the last four congresses.
Radical members press for immediate independence. conservatives oppose. If the resolution reaches the floor Speaker Osmena would rule against it.
The Allegheny National Bank, closed after a loss nearing two million dollars, will not reopen. Assets will offset liabilities with no assessments charged to stockholders.
Local Star itemization reports a lady’s brooch given away tonight, Royal market offering ten pounds lard for 95 cents, and multiple passengers and arrivals from West Chester Ainsworth Winfield Knox ville Oskaloosa Morning Sun Roscoe Hopkinton Morning Sun. The Republican national convention in Chicago adjourned sine die at 11:42 this forenoon with John S. Sherman of New York chosen as vice president on the first ballot. The vote was Sherman 816, Guild 75, Murphy 77, and the nomination was made unanimous. Taft and Sherman are the likely fall tickets.
The Philathea Class of the M E church offers a pantomime and supper on Monday evening with 25 cent admission. Also noting good pictures and music at Airdome with 16 cent admission and the Palace Bakery claims the best. Vienna promises a big day with assorted bakery goods and mentions Miss Eva Shaw seeking a home for a 6 week old infant in care of Mr and Mrs Logan while traveling in the east.
