House committee seeks new revenues from tax deduction curbs
The House Ways and Means Committee voted to raise about 500 million dollars by curbing itemized deductions for state and local taxes on gasoline autos licenses cigarettes and alcohol. Sales taxes property taxes and state income taxes would remain deductible. The plan to start January 1 excludes taxes paid this year or returns filed next spring. The move aims to support Kennedy tax reform efforts and could influence oil industry tax concessions and dividend treatment for stockholders.
