Fred J. Skubal Dies This Morning at 62

Fred J. Skubal, 62, farmer northeast of Haskins, died at 8:50 a.m. today, June 18, 1962, at a brother’s home. Heart attack caused death. Funeral arrangements are pending. Born October 8, 1899 in Washington County, he was son of Frank J. and Frances Hoshek Skubal. Survived by four brothers Frank, Vincent, John, Percy and one sister Marie Whetstone, all listed with ties to Lone Tree, Ainsworth, and Haskins.

Violent Thunderstorms Roar Across Midwest and South

United Press International reports a line of violent storms with a tornado in Minnesota and widespread damage across Iowa Wisconsin Illinois and nearby states. Cars houses barns planes and power infrastructure were damaged or destroyed with injuries and several fatalities reported.

Massive turnout at local airport for Mercury capsule display

About 6 000 visitors viewed a full scale Mercury capsule model at the municipal airport over the weekend. The exhibition also featured lights and displays about the U S space program, plus a fly in breakfast by the Washington Junior Chamber of Commerce. A National Guard helicopter and planes were on site and several attendees took airplane rides. many expressed interest in flying lessons and joining the airport club.

Washington County Fair season tickets on sale now

Season tickets for the four day Washington County Fair cost two dollars and allow entry for all four days July 30 to August 2. Mil o Orris notes tickets are sold at multiple county businesses and events include an amateur show, sheep herding demo, Miss Washington County contest, tractor pulling, 4 H show, parade of champions, and a horse show.

Viet Nam Troops Engage Viet Cong in Mekong Delta Battles

South Vietnamese troops killed 63 Viet Cong and captured 97 in two Mekong Delta battles. U S Marines airlifted 21st Division troops into Ba Xuven Province to reinforce civil guard elements. In a separate day long clash near An Giang and Vinh Long provinces, government forces killed 49 guerrillas and captured 80 with two Vietnamese dead and three wounded. An ambush near Trang Bom left 26 Vietnamese dead and five rebels killed.

Twelve killed on Iowa roads during weekend

A weekend of Iowa traffic accidents left twelve dead including three infants. Among the victims were Merle Hoyt Kron and Alfred Henry Harth in Iowa, with others in Estherville Sutherland Marshalltown and Muscatine. Several families faced injuries in crashes that stretched across multiple states.

Severe storms sweep Iowa injuring residents and damaging property

Violent thunderstorms Sunday and Monday injured more than twenty people and caused extensive damage across north-central and northeastern Iowa. Winds up to 85 mph felled trees and damaged buildings while two train boxcars were blown from tracks near Waverly. Hospitalized victims include 60 year old Vernon Gigl in Waterloo with rib and head injuries.

County conducts tuberculosis case finding drive

Officials promote a contact X ray program to locate hidden TB cases in the county. Mrs. Morrison notes TB is a silent disease and urges tuberculin skin testing followed by chest X rays for those testing positive. Two Are Killed In Crash On Highway 92

Two persons died and three others were injured in a head on collision on Iowa 92 seven miles west of Oskaloosa. Victims' names were being withheld. The Ohio plate car carried two dead and two injured. other occupants included a young man and a woman.

Longer Hours For Senators

Washington officials announce longer Senate sessions to break a legislative logjam. Leader Mansfield says daily hours will extend from about 9 a.m. to eight or nine hours, plus Saturdays, to act on Kennedy administration proposals and urgent economic bills. Senate debates on contracts oversight and a proposed nationwide fallout shelter system are also noted.
