Shenandoah notes Mr and Mrs George R Swalley of Glendale California travel to Iowa for a vacation financed by 2 207 pennies saved from their store cash register. The former residents weighed nearly 100 pounds in pennies saved.
A two day program at Iowa State College drew land appraisers real estate agents and insurance officials to study soil management.
A six year old girl, Manchester Anna Rose Malone, wandered from her home in the afternoon and was found on an island in the Maquoketa river by a search party of more than 100 men. She was missing for several hours before rescue.
Mrs Phyllis Marschall Crane author and play director from New York City is in Hampton for an extended visit at her parents Mr and Mrs Chris Marschall. She has written several books and gained recognition as a play director with her most recent work Bird in Hand staged June 7 at the Riverside Tennis Club in New York City.
Knoxville Olivers Shoemaker, a 68 year old farmer, killed his invalid wife and then killed himself with a shotgun. Police believe his worry over his illness and inability to care for his wife led to the double tragedy.

Rainfall over Washington county totaled nearly four inches with 3.80 inches recorded by 10 am. Two inches fell in forty minutes yesterday afternoon, flooding streets and choked sewers. Basements and crops suffered, with reports noting widespread water damage.

The Green Valley bridge and Booth bridge were impassable while Wassonville dam bridge threatened to cut roads. Maple’s Mill bridge rose three feet. L. J. Fountain family feared evacuation as Smith creek covered Oakwood pavilion driveway but did not reach the dance floor.
Mra J. 8 McElhinney serves with the state relief forces in the flying squadron based at Osceola Iowa. Miss Elizabeth Snorman who earlier worked with the flying squadron upon returning from Pittsburgh now holds a permanent post with the state relief committee in Spencer Iowa.
Grant Goodlander, recently promoted from here to Davenport as an agent of Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance, has now advanced to district manager. He and his wife moved Saturday to Cedar Rapids to make their home. Grant is a son of Mr and Mrs Lewis Goodlander of Washington.
Washington county supervisors awarded KE D Wahl of Victor Iowa a 31673.05 road surfacing contract after all bids were rejected at the public letting. Wahl’s bid equals 1.32 per cubic yard and includes 26416 cubic yards of crushed rock from Grace Hill and Batley quarries with equipment costs offset. Work starts July 1 and finishes November 1 covering over twelve miles of new surfacing on Seventy six Dutch Creek Oregon Washington and Clay townships plus maintenance rock on about thirty miles including Wellman Iowa City Cedar Richmond Washington Wayland Wyman Dublin roads.
Mrs. Will Davisson of seven miles north of Wellman suffered a stroke while picking strawberries. Found on the kitchen floor by neighbors, she was in no serious condition but resting easier the next day. This was her second stroke.
Des Moines report shows Iowa marriages at 203,840 last year with 4,334 divorces. from 1929 to 1934 there were 101,039 marriages and 24,182 divorces. Drake University psychologist Dr E G Lockhart cites Hollywood depictions and rising female independence as factors elevating the state divorce rate. He notes Woodbury county in 1933 had more divorces than marriages and argues self supporting training fosters greater divorce propensity.
Art and Cecil Ayres of Iowa City, involved in the L. C. Miller jewelry store burglary at Wellman last April, received 40 year terms plus ten years for breaking and entering and five years for larceny in Missouri. Accomplice Lee Blakely got five years for larceny. More loot recovered includes silverware, wall files, and a fountain pen, to be returned to Miller. other pens remain missing.
Des Moines reports 48 people killed in Iowa auto accidents in April, raising the year total to 146. 644 seriously injured in April, 2,385 injured in first four months. 692 accidents involved 1,030 cars. ages 19 and under, 10. 20s, 10. 30 to 60, 20. Most crashes on dry pavement in daylight.
At a Washington city council meeting twelve establishments were licensed to sell cigarettes for the year starting July 1. The list includes J. E. Lemmon, Frank L. Casey, Cantoni & Cantoni, John A. Winga, Phillips & Hebner, Nardy & Sodini, Hugh A. Dougall, George L. McDaniel, Harvey & Warfel, Ralph Leffler, Mrs. Edith Beaty, Julius Kunih. Beer licenses were deferred to a special session next Friday after an inquiry into compliance with the new beer ordinance.
