U P HIRING MEN TO RECALL CAR REPAIRERS NATIONWIDE
More than 566 car repairers, many from Omaha and Council Bluffs, have been recalled by Union Pacific since May 1. About 1,000 carpenters are expected back by August 1 as grain loading increases require more box cars. Wages start at 81 cents an hour, then drop to 73 cents after July 1 per labor board order. The Burlington plans to hire grain cars from eastern firms instead of recalling repairers, as farmers’ wheat sales remain uncertain.
