Deadly chlorine fog forces LA area evacuations
A chlorine and muriatic acid fire at a pool supply yard in Van Nuys produced a toxic chlorine fog over four square miles. About 5,000 residents evacuated and 50 hospitalized, as 150 firefighters battled the blaze for nine hours. The most seriously hurt, 28-year-old Jack Lefton, suffered respiratory arrest. 17 civilians were felled by fumes. Hospital stays included Northridge Hospital casualties.

Washington County Hospital Board approves 15-cent pay raise
