Iowa City reports Dr. Erwin C. Sage warns against modern cocktail parties and social gatherings. He urges better eating, rest, and exercise to strengthen families during war and prevent possible mental strain from losses in the armed forces.
Henry Ingles, a helper on the John Ashibacher arm near Waukon, Wisconsin, rode a mule while rounding up cattle. A dog jumped and bit the mule’s hind part, and Ingles was dragged before being freed. He was taken to a hospital in La Crosse with a fractured shoulder and facial injuries.
Algona selects Prank Kolilhwas as mayor to fill the unexpired term of J F Overmyer who died last week. Overmyer previously succeeded Specht, who died in March, with Ohrhaas acting as vice president of the Security State Bank and serving as councilman 1921–27 and since 1935.
In Des Moines the Iowa supreme court admitted 64 law graduates to practice. Atty Gen John Rankin presented the candidates and Chief Justice W L Bliss spoke briefly as B W Garrett sworn in the new lawyers. The four women are Marie B Atkinson Kathryn G Brown Lorna D Murphy and Cecile C Rhode.
A fire at a Coryell service station in Council Bluffs destroyed thirteen tires, a gasoline transport, and a private car. Victor Britt of Council Bluffs suffered first degree burns as the 7,000 gallon tank-dispenser unit was unloading gasoline when the blaze started.
First concrete was poured on the site of the new army general hospital in Clinton under the Rock Island district United States engineers. Foundation work for the hospital post exchange building followed grading that has been underway about a month and is more than half completed.
More than 400 delegates of the Iowa Grand Assembly of the Order of Rainbow Girls arrived in Ottumwa for a three day conclave. Miss Marion Krumbholz is named in attendance with events planned.
Iowa State college extension official Herb Howell told about 125 Washington county farmers and businesspeople at the court house last night that paying debts, buying war bonds, and heavy taxes are necessary to halt inflation. He warned the public to sacrifice, to keep prices down, and to act on the inflation threat by reducing living costs and conveying the message to neighbors.
Mason City guest presiding as grand worthy adviser of the Iowa order with Mrs. Daisy Ray of Oelwein serving as grand worthy matron in the ceremony.
President Roosevelt signed a bill granting soldiers and sailors an inaugural general pay increase in 20 years. The raise retroactive to June first lifts monthly pay from back privates to second lieutenants and ensigns, with the lowest grades increasing from 39 to 50 dollars.
At Leon Beatty post of the American Legion last night the nominating committee reported a slate of candidates for the July 7 election, but the list was not complete and publication was delayed. Commander S. W. Easter presided as members anticipated strong turnout and noted Boys' State participation. Entertainment featured Doris Gray with Mrs. Boyd White and Esther Stewart readings, followed by a post-meeting meal.
June 17 marked continuing training for the Iowa Home Guard with Colonel Percy Lainson, chief of staff, directing activities in Des Moines. The report notes ongoing readiness efforts and command oversight by Lainson.
Donald M. Nelson told the House Ways and Means Committee that a 94 9 percent excess profits tax threatens full wartime efficiency. He urged keeping the top rate near 80 percent and proposed crediting excess amounts above 80 percent to corporate accounts for postwar repayment if the rate rises.
This morning the rationing board reviewed requests for truck and tractor tires totaling 76 while the weekly quota stands at 12. Retreads are advised for those with usable carcasses, as the June retread allotment is 74 and few new tires may be available for farm pickups and cars. Excess sugar requests will be checked by the state office.
The Power of God, a motion picture by Dr. Walter Maier of St. Louis, will be shown Friday and Saturday nights at 7:45 in Washington. Rev. H. R. Correll of Dayton, Ohio presents the program. The feature is described as inspiring and uplifting and the public is invited.
The military police battalion at Camp Dodge will continue training indefinitely. Previously the camp duration was extended month to month by order of Governor George A. Wilson and began on April 15.
Postmaster M C DeLong reports few federal automobile use stamps have sold as the July first deadline nears. Washington county vehicle owners paid 2 09 last February for stamps valid until July, now 5 will cover the tax for a year, on sale since June 10 with a looming rush.
Ten members of the spring civilian pilot training class completed flight tests at the Washington airport under two Civil Aeronautics Authority inspectors. Written exams were also given to civilian students from Muscatine and Davenport as preparations begin for two summer classes of ten students each.
A blaze in the East Waterloo business district today damaged the city hall and destroyed six shops. The one story brick building suffered extensive smoke and fire damage with total losses estimated between 65 000 and 75 000 dollars.
At an East Coast port on June 17 officials report forty one seamen dead after Axis submarine attacks sank two American merchant ships flying Central American flags. Several more are reported missing aboard a vessel south of Cuba, survivors say.
United Nations forces with American air power halted axis air drives in Libya and Sevastopol as major operations continued. British supply risks in Libya were highlighted, with Allied convoys hit but Tobruk and Malta receiving aid from American and RAF planes. U S Liberator bombers attacked Italian battleships amid reports of smoke from the dreadnought as planes headed off a British convoy to Malta.
Funeral services for Mrs Sophia Wolf are announced for Thursday morning at 9 30 at St James church with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Rev H C Corcoran officiates. L A Jones funeral home handles arrangements.
Government officials say the sugar situation has improved in recent weeks but a lack of ships will prevent immediate changes in the rationing program. If shipping improves enough it may be possible to raise the current one half pound weekly allowance.
The Journal reports a special USO film titled Mr Gardenia Jones to run the rest of the week at the State theater. Stars Laraine Day and Ronald Reagan portray the story of the USO and its work for men in the camps.
