Floating eight row planter boosts Bonar's planting speed

Bob Bonar, a 26 year old farmer near Washington, rebuilt a four row planter into an eight row system using International Harvester parts and a borrowed blueprint. The floating arrangement halves planting time and fuel use, folds to 11 feet wide, and includes a harrow, gauge wheels, a photo electric sensor and a small computer to monitor seed supply and clogs. Bonar planted 400 acres of corn this year, achieving about 15 acres per hour and one 11 bushel load covering 36 acres, while also selling hogs and cattle.
