The United Presbyterian Vacation Bible school will present its program for the opening exercises for the Sabbath school Sunday morning June 15. There will be no 10 45 morning church service at the United Presbyterian church June 18. Members may visit other churches in the community and nearby towns.
Wesley Boulton 80 of Columbus Junction dies after being struck by a car on Highway 61 near the Louisa county home. Vern C. Wardrow of Muscatine driven, coroner reports no inquest. Rev. Amos Glendening to lead funeral Sunday 2:30 p.m. at Dixie Free Methodist Church. Burial in Columbus City. body at Stephens Funeral Home. Survived by two sisters Mrs Lee Cuthamp and Mrs H H Skipton of Columbus City.
Senator Joseph R. McCarthy seeks a new publisher for a housing booklet tied to the Lustron sale. He says the 1948 contract keeps the material up to date and may still have value. Harnischfeger Co. previously showed interest. A photostat of Lustron's $16,000 check was presented at the bankruptcy hearing. McGrath may pursue an inquiry into Lustron's expenditures.
The Wings Over Jordan Negro choir will appear Sunday June 18 at 8 p m at the Christian church. Sponsored by the Washington Ministerial association no admission charge will be asked a free will offering will be taken. The event opens the summer Sunday evening union services in Central Park with one church in charge each Sunday.
The western Pennsylvania milk strike enters its second week as an emergency distribution system for babies and the sick is stressed. Doctors certify milk at 5 000 daily, pushing totals past 25 000, while union leader Tevis warns the system may collapse by Monday if physicians keep certifying at wholesale rates.
The Journal corrects an error stating Austin J. Evans who graduates from Yale University this year is not the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. 8. A. Stephens of Ainsworth. Mrs. Evans is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephens.
President Truman vetoed the basing point bill saying it would weaken anti trust protection and hamstring the federal trade commission. He warned it could diminish the Robinson Patman act safeguards for small businesses and noted it was his second major veto this session.
Senator McCarthy urged immediate release of Larsen testimony in the Amerasia case and accused Peurifoy of pressuring for favorable handling. Chairman Tydings said Larsen would not be made public now as the investigation continues. The dispute centers on alleged efforts to influence Larsen's secret 1945 testimony and the handling of John S. Service.
A marriage license was issued today to Robert F. Krebs and Matilda Jean King, both of Wellman.

Trinity Lutheran church opens its annual Lutheran vacation Bible school on Monday June 19 with sessions from 9 to 11 45 a m and 2 to 3 p m. Teachers include Mrs H Moll Mrs Wray Phillips Bill Wessler and Pastor O H Moll. Children from kindergarten through the 7th grade invited to attend with lessons titled The Life Work of Jesus.
The King's Men from Wheaton College Illinois will sing and share a message at Prairie Flower Baptist Church eight miles northwest of Washington on Friday June 23. The public is invited to attend this gospel program with testimony in song and sermon.

The CIO United Auto Workers and Allis-Chalmers announced a five year, company financed plan giving $100 monthly pensions at 65 after 25 years. It covers 16,000 UAW members at five plants in West Allis Springfield Gadsden La Crosse and Pittsburgh with early retirement options and disability benefits.
C J Brookhart of Lewiston Missouri, sought on a charge of obtaining money under false pretenses, was arrested in Tampa Florida. Sheriff Charles Snyder plans to transport him to Washington to face charges after a months long manhunt across several states. Brookhart allegedly sold 300 calves to Peterson Cattle Co and failed to deliver, causing financial losses and additional buyout costs. He is also wanted in Lewis County Missouri on a similar charge.
A major streetcar and bus strike in Los Angeles halts service for over a million riders. Negotiations with AFL affiliated drivers failed, 4,000 workers quit at midnight, disrupting commutes across the vast metropolis. City officials sought to delay the walkout as Shriners gathered for a convention.
Dr. C. Raymond Reed pastor of the Washington Methodist church was named grand chaplain of the Iowa grand lodge of Masons at the 106th annual communication in Burlington. J. Ellis Grayson of Cedar Falls was named grand ruler. W. T. Carson and Frank Hemming attended from Washington. The meeting ran four days this week.
Henry Hughes a former Washington resident died at his Albia home after a three weeks illness at age 75. The funeral will be held in Albia at 1 o clock Sunday afternoon. Survived by his wife and daughter Mrs Ed Wilson of Albia.
Last rites were conducted at 2 PM Thursday at Jones Funeral Home for Mrs. James A Thompson. Rev Earl Longfellow led the service and burial followed in Elm Grove Cemetery with casketbearers Charles Griffith Clement Griffith Warren Griffith Robert Griffith Edwin Griffith and Clem Griffith Jr.
The Japanese Communist Party filed suit in Tokyo seeking to overturn the purge of 41 top leaders as unconstitutional and violating the Potsdam agreement. The Tokyo district court initially rejected for form and copies but later accepted after revisions. officials expect dismissal over lack of court authority to overrule General MacArthur's directives.
FBI announces arrest of army veteran David Greens Glass 28 on spy charges for allegedly betraying atomic secrets to the Soviets. He was picked up at his New York home and charged with turning over documents to Harry Gold, with ties to Dr. Fuchs.
Iowa officials fired two bullets from a rusted .22 caliber Colt found near the Chavis home in Ames as a potential clue to the 1948 slaying of Henry Chavis. Nebergall said lab tests on bullets and shell casings will determine if they match evidence from the scene. results will not be released.
Mr and Mrs Paulis Lans and daughter Valda arrive in Iowa City as displaced persons sponsored by the United Presbyterian Church Men s Brotherhood. Lans brother Valdis will join later and the family will work at the UP Home.
Mrs. James Gifford of New York City spent Tuesday at the Fred Longer home en route to Derver Colorado where she will meet her husband and accompany him to California where he will teach this summer. He is the associate Dean of the College of Law at Columbia University.
