English Poet Baxendale Gored by Bull Near Indianola Home

Judging Team Ties for First at Mt Pleasant Show
Two Washington county 4-H judging teams tied for first with Lee county at the junior judging contest linked to the district Holstein and Guernsey Show in Mt Pleasant. Alvin Yorak, Stanley Chabal, and William Maas scored 1065 of 1200 to share top honors with the Weber brothers and Wilbur Rotter of Lee county. The Henry county team placed third, and another Washington group finished fourth. Eight vocational agriculture and 4-H teams competed as Holstein cows and Guernsey cows were judged. The district show at Henry county fairgrounds drew about 4100 spectators with 43 Holsteins and 38 Guernseys shown. Grand champions included J. T. Kessler, Maplecrest, and others. a district Guernsey organization formed with Lester Sherman president.

Hope for Rescue Fades After Submarine Sinking Near Indo China
Paris reports French submarine Phenix with about 60 crew members sank off Saigon in shark infested waters. All hope of saving the crew is abandoned after more than 30 hours underwater. Phenix was a 1379 ton, 302 foot vessel on detached service with no cause yet disclosed. This follows recent submarine disasters including the American Squalus and British Thetis.
