Champion of Silver Richard Bland Dies After Long Illness
Richard Parks Bland of Missouri, a longtime advocate of silver coinage and a key figure in Forty third Congress debates, died at 4:30 am after a relapse from a grip infection. Born August 19, 1835 in Kentucky, Bland's career included teaching, law practice, and service as Lebanon Missouri representative. He helped push free silver and greenback policies and sat as Speaker pro tempore of the House during the Forty third Congress. He will lie in state at the Opera House before a public viewing.
