A 10-inch pipe burst at about 11 10 a m at E Fifth and N Second, leaving residents between N Iowa and N Fourth on Fifth without water until repairs finish this afternoon. Pressure should return citywide as work continues. The sidewalk fracture reportedly lifted the walkway during rupture.
New Conger rooms Pioneer Kitchen and Native American Room set for public viewing on Saturday afternoon June 19 with a 2 p.m. lawn ceremony at Historic Conger House. If rain, program moves to the High School auditorium. Admission 1 adult 50 cents child under 12.
Carol Giardino, 41, widow and mother of ten, announces a campaign committee for the clerk of district court on the democratic ticket. Committee includes Dale Marek as chairman, Jim Gorham treasurer, plus Terry Gent, Shirley Schooley, Maxine Schnoebelen, Earl Rae, Herb Hammen, Lyle Wilson, Jim Wood. Giardino emphasizes integrity, capability, and responsiveness to voters as county government goals. She works in the McCleery-Cumming office and plans training to prepare for duties of the clerk of court.

Washington Plan and Zoning Commission rejected a request to rezone 1040 S Sixth Ave from residential to business to allow a retail pharmacy by Sandra K Booth and George and Isley. Opponents argued area should remain residential. commission sent the matter to the City Council with a unanimous vote against the change.
Iowa faced its third consecutive day of violent storms with tornadoes heavy rains and flooding. The National Weather Service warned of a flood in Hamburg Cass County where Nishnabotna River rose six feet above flood stage. Six inches of rain fell over the weekend and more storms threatened other rivers. A funnel cloud was seen near Lewis Cass County and tornadoes touched Palo Alto County earlier Monday night.
David Alan Fagen 19 of rural Keota remains jailed on an open murder charge in the shooting death of Keota Night Marshal Douglas Bell. Bond was continued at 500000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m. June 28 in Keokuk County Magistrate Court. Bell’s body was found along Highway 77 about 20 miles south of Keota, shot several times.
Washington City Council after a closed session voted to press legal action to remove a wooden stairway and platform at 210 W. Washington St citing fire and zoning violations. Baldrige law firm partner John Baldrige says he seeks a permanent injunction against removal and alleges equal protection issues. The case traces to a 1974 stairway built in wood and injunctions restraining city action.
