At the Iowa State Fair August 18 to 27, exhibits will showcase pioneer items from 1830 to 1865 including quill pens almanacs carts coffee grinders and daguerreotypes. State Fair Secretary Kenneth Falk hopes items become a permanent museum collection with $2014 total awards for pioneer items and a top prize of $40 for transportation related pieces.

Two men robbed the Hartford Carlisle Savings Bank in Runnells Iowa tying 70 plus cashier Raymond Cutforth with rope and forcing vault entry. The incident occurred about 8 am as townsfolk alerted Sheriff’s deputies. robbers were believed to drive a 1957 black Chevrolet and escaped with an undetermined amount.
Senator Kenneth Nurse sponsors a resolution allowing the Iowa Board of Regents to issue bonds for a University of Iowa Hospital addition in Iowa City. The measure, tied to a broader bill, would let the Regents sell up to 12 million in bonds to finance a 466000 square foot expansion costing about 17.55 million with revenues from University Hospitals pledged to repay. The project includes operating rooms radiology and outpatient and inpatient facilities.
DES MOINES UPI Four Iowa House members Leroy Petersen Keith Vetter Dale Cochran and Keith Dunton join a House Senate conference committee to resolve differences on a bill changing state school aid distribution and boosting funding. Senate members include Jospeh Cassidy Donald McGill Kenneth Nurse and Arthur Nel. The Petersen plan backs a House distribution while the Senate favors proportionate sharing.
U S infantry and South Vietnamese forces struck a Viet Cong sanctuary north of Saigon and in the Mekong Delta, claiming heavy killings on both sides. Reports say 271 Communists died in the two battles as Ky urged boosting U S strength to about 600,000 to win the war.
Gov. Harold E. Hughes said the personal property tax relief bill approved by the Iowa Senate would aid farmers at the expense of salaried and hourly workers. He questioned the $5,000 exemption and the resulting income tax credits, and raised concerns about non residents who own property in Iowa but do not pay state income taxes. The bill passed 48 to 13 amid lengthy debate, while its long term fiscal effects and the fate of related livestock and household tax exemptions remained in doubt.
A powerful storm battered northwest Iowa from LeMars to the Minnesota border, injuring three people including Jerry Lias, 20, and his wife Linda, 17, in Sioux City. The Spencer area saw 70 mph winds damaging a TV tower and barns, with a motel destroyed near West Okoboji. Turkeys escaped after farm buildings collapsed, and widespread power outages and debris followed across LeMars, Milford, and Spirit Lake.
