Charles City Wins Low Bid for Washington Street Work
Allied Construction Co. of Charles City won the Washington street improvement bid at 280 359.80, about 15 percent below the engineer's estimate. The contract saves 49 725.90 from the 330 085.70 forecast and will surface about 48 blocks with Portland concrete this summer after preliminary work. Five bids were submitted, with a high of 335 477.00 and no objectors at the prior hearing.

A car on Highway No. 1 north of Washington caught fire Wednesday night, prompting a nine mile run by Farmers Mutual Insurance fire truck. Volunteer Firemen Fight Practice Fire in Old Building
