Two youths robbed the Green tavern in Charles City, beating proprietor C. L. Calentine and stealing about $80 after threatening customers. Mrs. Calentine was prodded with a gun as she hesitated at the register. the couple saved $55 from their wallet before the pair fled in a car.
Des Moines reports a nationwide two week scrap rubber collection drive starting this morning. Iowa campaign star A F Richter of Maines urges residents to search garages basements and attics for discarded rubber articles to fill collection stations.
Des Moines announced a one week delay in opening summer training camps for the Iowa State guard after a staff meeting. The first 14 day training period at Camp Dodge will start June 28 instead of June 21, with the training period ending July 11.
Arthur Durkin about 41 of Muscatine died after a Milwaukee passenger train struck him while he was asleep on the track. Train crew said Durkin appeared to be sleeping when hit.
Independence reports Victor Newland 18 of Center Point died from injuries after a motorcycle crash on Highway 20 two miles west of Independence. Arthur Lanning of Toddville was riding with him. Lanning could not stop as Newland’s bike overturned and struck him. Coroner Dr Hersey and Sheriff James McConnell called the crash unavoidable and could not determine the cause.
Claude Habberstad of Sheep Hill Park demonstrates wooden automobile tires on the car’s front wheels reaching 75 mph. The inventor says these tires suit front wheels only, not for all four, due to traction concerns. Riders note the tires ride smoothly with little jolting and resemble rubber on a smooth road at 35 mph.
Washington officials set June 7 8 9 10 196? as special time to observe and cooperate in the national USO war fund drive. The proclamation notes USO’s widespread support for armed services and calls city residents to contribute to the $32 million national campaign.
Dr. R. C. Keagy, popular pastor of the Washington Methodist church, starts his fourth year after being appointed by Bishop J. Ralph Magee at the Iowa-Des Moines conference in Mt Pleasant. The conference honored eleven retiring pastors with long service records and announced pastoral assignments in several nearby communities.
Coach John Harp announced summer swimming classes for boys at the Y pool starting Wednesday. Private instruction available for certain forenoons with supervision by Harp. no height limit, minimum height 45 inches, limited slots, call Leigh Soule or Harp to arrange. Six boys already signed: Bob Logan, Aled Barclay, Frank Miller Jr., Jimmy Sherman, Eddie, and John Winga Jr.
President Roosevelt told Congress that lend-lease costs cannot be measured in money and that repayment will come in blood and toil. Highlights show $4.497 billion in aid through May, at $8 billion per year, plus reciprocal benefits as Allies feed and equip American troops. The aim remains victory over the Axis.
War bond and stamp drive by Journal carrier boys fell to the lowest weekly total in weeks with $1,074.60 in bonds and $550 in stamps. Top seller Joe Sweet led at $161 followed by John Watson $129 and Jack Martin $105.05. Jim Kaster and Dale White earned new Star awards as Jim surpassed $2000 in sales.
The Washington Chamber of Commerce announces Get Acquainted Week from June 21 to 27 with a city wide effort to welcome newcomers. Host couples will accompany new residents to a reception, while Sunday emphasizes church attendance and community fellowship.
Des Moines reports a $146604.16 1942 Iowa Christmas seal sale high, up from 1940. Per capita giving rose to 5.7 cents, with 97 of 99 counties beating 1940 totals. Johnson County led with 10.9 stamps per capita. Clarke held long record until 1919. National rank Iowa twenty first. funds support tuberculosis work and war industry health efforts.
The county health unit announces a health conference in West Chester on Thursday June 18. Mothers with children under five not yet in school may call Mrs Homer Porter at No 35 West Chester to enroll. The free meetings aim to help children and mothers correct health conditions.
Only one candidate has filed campaign expenses for the June 1 primary. Charles Custer seeks the Republican nomination for supervisor and reports total expenditures of 18.11 dollars on newspaper ads cards stickers and gasoline. All candidates must file expense accounts by July 1, thirty days after the primary.
The Treasury proposed excise taxes on sugar salt tea coffee electric power fuel gas barber and beauty shop services and similar items to fill a 2 billion dollar gap in the 1942 war revenue program. House Ways and Means committee noted a general sales tax might yield more revenue as the bill neared completion. The nine items are expected to raise about 200 million dollars.
The Leon Beatty post American Legion holds its regular meeting Tuesday evening with special entertainment and refreshments. The nominating committee report to be voted on July 7 will be presented at this gathering.
Governor George A. Wilson addressed 641 Hawkeye Boys State members praising the program for teaching real government functions. He warned that after the war the nation’s leadership would rest on these youths and stressed the need for civic understanding.
Two 16 year old Brighton youths planned a downstream voyage by rowboat from Brighton to Keokuk inspired by Tom Sawyer. They stole a boat and raided several river shacks along the Skunk river between Brighton and Oakland Mills, were captured near Oakland Mills, and face juvenile court hearings with possible placement in a state school. Sheriff H M Putnam is recovering stolen goods from owners Ralph McCreedy Tim Dodd John Ryan Fred Graham Dutch Wanerus Keith Sweet and others.
United Nations forces and axis clash across three fronts in Russia including Sevastopol where the Black Sea fleet fights, Kharkov where Germans push near the Domets, and near Leningrad with large scale sea and air attacks.
Supt. J. L. Calkins states applications for extra canning sugar rations will be taken at the West Chester schools Monday Tuesday and Wednesday evenings this week from seven to nine. He notes this will finish the canning sugar sessions until about mid July.
