Washington firemen and police were called to the water plant area when a high tension electrical wire broke along the street. The 110 000 volt line tangled with other wires and was kept off the ground. A minor tree fire started but caused no serious damage. Utilities officials cut power to the line to begin repairs.
Eight year old or older boys are urged to reserve spots at the Washington Y camp with the Ottumwa YMCA delegation. Camp Arrowhead trip runs July 12 to 20. Registration is 3 dollars with an additional 10 dollars due at camp start.
A Friday night storm with strong winds toppled several tree limbs in Washington but caused little damage. Journal reports two felled trees, one at the Chance home south of Washington and another at the Don Sheetz farm where a tree fell on a turn in street.
Senator Brien McMahon of Connecticut urged producing thousands of hydrogen bombs as battlefield weapons to deter Russia. As chairman of the Atomic Energy Committee, he hinted the U S may be near perfecting the H bomb and announced a shift into the hydrogen era without confirming test plans at Bikini Atoll this fall.

GOP farm leaders from 11 Corn Belt states met to finalize a farm plank for the Republican National Convention. A committee of 11 drafted the plank, aiming for parity related price supports with a Nebraska plan proposing support near parity and not below 50 percent.

Curtis Jones of Waterloo Michigan dislocated shoulder in a night crash one mile east of Washington on Highway Ye. His truck overturned after hitting a slippery shoulder. salvaged strawberries were brought into town for sale and Jones was hospitalized.
A 600 foot water spout with 100 mph winds struck a bayside community near St. Petersburg causing extensive damage. It wrecked boats, toppled trees, and cut power to about 4 000 residents with no injuries reported. Local residents described the moment as a giant splash.
A Social Security Administration official from Burlington Iowa will visit Washington on Wednesday June US at the Iowa State Employment Office. The representative will also be in Wellman Wednesday afternoon from 2 to 2 30 p.m. at the Community Building to answer questions about benefits and requirements.
