Britain signals support for French wartime decisions as Paris falls and government moves to Bordeaux. German sources claim Paris occupation and imminent French military collapse with Britain set to continue the war.
County auditor Mrs Ethel Grecian Wilson lists delegates elected at June 3 primaries for the Republican and Democratic county conventions to be held in Washington Saturday June 249 Each party also names one man and one woman from each voting precinct as committeemen Delegates will advance to state conventions in July Republicans report no county ticket to name as selections were decided at the primary Democrats expect to fill their county ticket at the convention Names listed include J F Rittenhouse Earl Smith H L Brinton and others across Cedar Crawford Kalona Dutch Creek West Chester and Franklin Center precincts Committeemen are named alongside the delegates for each township

President Roosevelt discounted Hitler's assurances that Germany has no aims in the western hemisphere and said the United States is supplying the Allies with the means of war. He recalled past pledges by Germany that were broken, noting such promises could be documented with dates and nations involved.
Holly BE Johnston of Crawfordsville has bought the Fuller farm an 80 acre tract southeast of Crawfordsville under a tenant purchase program. Hayden Thomas operates the farm now as part of Washington county’s fourth such purchase. Purchase price 5600 dollars with a forty year loan at 3 percent. The Johnston family plans to market all livestock and reduce annual housing costs by about 100 dollars compared with rent.

Miss Lillian Leismer of Petoskey Michigan informed Chief of Police Jay Brown that she had recovered her suitcase left in a car on a Washington street. A Columbus Junction woman found the case in her vehicle and Brown arranged return through newspaper notice and city hall, with Leismer expressing gratitude.
Van Winkle announces the opening of a new plumbing and heating shop in the old Nate Black building at 218 South Iowa Avenue. He brings twenty five years of experience and learned the trade with Wilson Heating Company in Wash.
Van Winkle spent time in town then Illinois where he practiced his trade for sixteen years. He is a member of the Baptist church.
A Washington woman found two silver half dollars dated 1858 and 1876 while digging in her garden. She donated the find to the Red Cross and asked for anonymity, noting the thrill of uncovering money but preferring her vegetables remain valued higher.
Dale Minick 37 died at 2 a.m. in his parents home at 514 West Second Street after a two week illness from bronchial pneumonia. Private funeral Sunday at 4 p.m. at Jones funeral home with Rev. J. Fred Mund officiating. burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Born May 22, 1898 in Washington, he was son of Ralph and Leonora Waters Milner. He worked as a steam fitter in Michigan before returning to Washington six years ago to work with his father. He was never married and belonged to the Baptist church. Surviving: his parents and one brother, Robert.
Washington board of education will not sell the old Lincoln school on South Iowa avenue before August 1 to allow local groups to bid for the property. If no offers arise, the building and four lots may be sold for wrecking. separate sale of two front lots could occur if no buyer appears. The Centennial and Wallace buildings have been sold to Gerdes Wrecking of Lincoln for 405 and 550 respectively. wrecking work has begun on Centennial.
A special city council meeting yesterday approved a resolution empowering the estate highway commission to maintain primary highways in Washington. The duties include ordinary repairs and snow plowing on travelled streets, but exclude snow loading and hauling, sprinkling, street sweeping, and work on sewer or water mains under streets.
Two horses owned by Edi son Lea at Lockridge escaped from their new stable last week and attempted to return to the family homestead. They were struck and killed by a train while on the move.
