Senate considers adjournment as soon as next week

Washington reports the Republican steering committee met for an hour and prepared for quick adjournment after next week. All major matters are ready for conference except sundry civil and general deficiency bills and the isthmian canal type bill. If House progress continues, Hale believes these can be disposed by June 25 to 27, enabling an adjournment on the 27th or 28th. The plan expects a canal vote in the Senate with no further action this session. Spooner indicated canal funds can support either lock or sea level projects, with Stevans to proceed as needed. Congress, split on the canal, will not resolve it this session, but a sea level canal seems favored in the Senate.
