Cancer Crusade needs funds and volunteers in Washington County

The Washington County Chapter of the American Cancer Society met Friday. The county is $1,600 short of this year’s goal for the Cancer Crusade. Volunteers should finish calls and turn kits in to Juanita Hering at the Washington State Bank or to their captain. Contributions may be given to Miss Hering or County Treasurer Geraldine Schulty at the National Bank if contacted, and a booth funded by Washington State Bank supported the fair. Plans covered staffing the booth, distributing leaflets, film shows, and projector instruction for the county fair July 30 through August 2. Over 20 films cover cancer warning signals, quackery, smoking dangers, and tests. A new film, On With Your Life, features Peter Graves and others. The fair committee includes Burge Hammond, Gerald Edwards, Earl Redlinger, Joe Knotek. Claudia Camper of Chicago will register youth and prize distribution. Anyone with free time may volunteer. The Iowa Division annual meeting is October 13.

George Orr cited projects that uncovered attempts by mobsters to control garbage collection in eastern cities like Cedar Rapids. A key agent helped expose a multi county effort to monopolize trash firms, linked to individuals with New York ties. indictments in Cedar Rapids last April stopped the plan which could have affected 7 to 10 counties and millions annually. Orr noted most work is done publicly and replied to a critic of unit secrecy.
