Iowa Farm Outlook: Fed Cattle Prices Stable Through Summer
Iowa State University economist Gene Futrell says fed cattle prices should stay near late May levels with modest strength into summer. Weekly Chicago Choice steer prices have ranged 27 to 28 dollars per cwt since mid February, while Iowa direct sales run 25.50 to 27.25. Feedlot placements in spring and summer will shape late year prospects, with April Iowa placements down four percent from last year.

More crops under support program
U S farmers placed larger quantities of 1967 crop feed grains under the price support program this season than in prior years. Through April corn loan activity totaled 420 million bushels, far above last year’s 235 million. Redemptions reached 21 million, similar to 1966, but total redemptions likely will not reach 128 million from the 1966-67 regular loan. Projections show about 2.5 billion bushels of corn could be sold this season, about 53 percent of the crop and over 400 million more than 1966-67. Despite lower average prices, crop value is about 3 percent below 1966’s record, but sales value rose 2 percent to a record 2.6 billion. Total corn exports are seen near 625 million, 25-30 percent above 1966-67. Corn remains bright, while sorghum, oats, and barley exports lag.

Water vital for hogs in hot weather and growth
Iowa State University extension livestock specialist Harold Hodson stresses that clean fresh water is the most important nutrient for swine growth. He urges one automatic waterer cup per 20 25 pigs, one per 10 12 sows, and one per 5 6 sows with litters, plus water for nursing piglets. A steady supply improves feed efficiency and overall health.
