Muscatine man says many were refused entrance to counting room
Democratic county chairman Jay L. Beckley of Muscatine said several people were denied admittance when trying to enter the election returns counting room during the June 2 primary. He criticized Auditor E.R. Swickard for counting in locked Muscatine Journal offices rather than the courthouse. Beckley said doors were locked front and rear and that others witnessed refusals after attracting attention inside. Swickard defended the 20 year old method as standard and said doors were open in the past. Beckley argued the auditor must stay on duty until tabulation is complete and that the public facilities exist for this purpose. He offered to supply names of witnesses. Swickard planned to move counting to the courthouse for the November election after a complaint from another party.
