Warden W H Frazer of the Anamosa state reformatory has filed an application to continue in his present position after July 1. State board of control officials said Monday. Frazer resigned effective July 1 while the legislature was in session. The old control board accepted the resignation before the board was replaced.
In Grinnell Monday morning Grinnell college seniors received diplomas while an undetermined number of pickpockets netted about $200 from six victims. The crime occurred during the graduation ceremonies at the Congregational church where Rabbi Eugene Mannheimer of Des Moines had his pockets picked in the sight of a state supreme court justice and a U.S. cabinet member. Mannheimer, present to see his son graduate, lost a wallet containing $40.
More than 500 members of the Rainbow Girls order registered for four assemblies at the Masonic temple in Cedap Rapids. The four sessions run through Wednesday with a violet session honoring founder W. Mark Seson. Monday featured degree work by grand officers. new state officers will be elected Wednesday morning. Jane Kudrle of Sioux City is grand worthy adviser.
Iowa Republican headquarters announced a meeting of the state central committee in Des Moines on June 23 to consider the resignation of J H Milroy of Vinton as state chairman. Milroy has led Iowa activities since 1937 with Harry Swan of Atlantic mentioned as a potential successor.
Phillips Petroleum Co added 4,000 acres to its oil and gas leases in Union County Iowa bringing the total to 54,846 acres. Seis mograph operators worked about a mile west of the Union County line and a mile south of Highway 4 using blasts to map rock layers. Geophones in shallow surface holes and up to 200 yards from blasts recorded transmitions as the survey progresses. Completion will take several weeks.
Donald McDermott, 17, went swimming at Cedar River dam and left clothes by the control house chimney. A fire started in the caretaker's stove and firefighters saved part of his leather billfold and shoe soles.
Striking CIO workers hurled stones and eggs at street cars carrying office staff into the Allis-Chalmers works. Police and deputies used tear gas. two officers and four deputies were injured. About 2,000 pickets and 2,000 bystanders formed a tense scene before the plant entrance as guards fired tear gas bombs to push back the crowd. The company said all office workers could enter. governors observers weighed possible National Guard involvement.
Director Milo T. Sorden leads the municipal band with soloist Daryl Fetters performing Euphonium pieces. The program includes Fillmore Overture The Whistler and Donkey Serenade from The Firefly, marches like Cadete on Parade and On the Mall, and Victor Herbert selections arranged by Lake. Daryl Fetters features Pale Moon and Loyalty Novelty.
The regular June meeting of the Chamber of Commerce will be held Wednesday evening at the Congress hotel. Secretary O. E. Schmitt announced the program includes Shannon and Harry Simpson on the committee and reports from the big days, centennial, and fountain committees. Discussion will cover Chamber activities and centennial celebration matters.
Mrs. Leslie Dunlap invites Howell Neighborhood children from Chicago to spend the summer in Washington and nearby communities. Concrete pouring on North Second Avenue near the underpass neared completion south of the railway tracks but rain halted progress. About thirty feet remain to connect with the old pavement as Bob Risk and his crew paused after a stretch of productive work yesterday.
Thirty five DeMolays attended the regular meeting at the Masonic Temple last evening. Officers were installed during the session, marking a ceremonial upgrade of leadership.
Washington ministers voted at a special meeting to hold one Sunday evening union service in Central Park each week from July through August. July 2 starts the series with Dr. Arthur Atack of the Methodist church preaching, others rotating weekly as vacation schedules allow.
A regimental reunion of the 50th Iowa Infantry veterans will be held in Burlington during the state encampment of the U S W V from June 18 to 20. Survivors meet at Hotel Burlington June 19 at 6 p m for a dinner and an impromptu program with Judge Lieutenant Colonel John T Moffit as toastmaster. A permanent organization and annual reunion are hoped. A company of the Fiftieth went to the Spanish war from Washington.
A party for the Rainbow Girls was organized with plans to hold the event in the near future. The notice notes intended activities and coordinating organizers.
In Lansing on June 13, wartime era report states 409 econvict miners at the state prison ended a sitdown strike after negotiations with Warden Amrine. They abandoned demands for silk underwear, fearing gas or guns would be used, and accepted new disciplinary regulations. No violence occurred.
London report says 907 German Jewish refugees aboard the liner St Louis were saved from return to Germany by an inter government committee. Belgium granted 260, the Netherlands 194, France about 200, Great Britain the remainder. The United States Joint Distribution Committee offered to cover their maintenance. Refused refuge in Cuba. ship slowed to seek a solution.
Rain delays wash out planned Phillips 66 flight from Sigourney to Washington. A big passenger plane was to spend the day in a field near town and make occasional flights, but no plane arrived this morning. Local men who planned to drive to Sigourney and back were disappointed.
Mrs Ann Eliza Looney widow of Henry D Looney died at 6 15 P M yesterday at 619 East Van Buren street after a heart illness. Funeral services will be held 2 30 P M Wednesday at the Looney home with Rev Vernon Carter of the Christian church officiating. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery. She was born July 3 1851 south of Washington. Survived by daughter Carrie M Elwell four grandchildren and six great grandchildren and one sister Mrs Maggie Cooper.
The Washington Concert band fully joins the Whisker club as a quartet and a men chorus are promised by Harry Ramseyer. The Centennial club, now about five hundred strong, invites the Washington Municipal band to build pre centennial spirit through facial adornment and new memberships surge. A mayoral proclamation for a summer Centennial in Keosauqua is cited, noting Washington's rising reputation and another Whisker club forming. The Sunbonnet club plans a canvas of the men.
The Washington council of the Knights of Columbus elected officers last night. J. M. Kelly was chosen grand knight for the ninth time, with Mark Koening as deputy grand knight and Rev. Father Co rer as chaplain. Other officers include Dr. J. A. Marie as chancellor and Albert Kk Schulze as recorder. The council also voted $10 to the centennial fountain fund and named delegates to the state convention.
The Washington Y M C A board discussed extending Y activities to rural young men with a special joining rate. A July 17 community room dinner was set, and Secretary Soule will attend George Williams College in Chicago for a four week course. pool rules updates and lifeguard scheduling were approved, with room rental rates reduced for full room use and discounts for partial use.

Justice of the Peace W. Eldridge today jailed Meriia Lemons for twenty days for operating a motor vehicle without a license. Lemons borrowed a car from Clarence Dusenbery, drove four blocks then to Iowa City, where the wreck damaged the car beyond repair. The owner sold it for $17.50 after the accident. Committees for the year were announced by President John Winga, covering Physical, Boy's work, Finance, House, Endowment, Publicity, Membership, Educational, Social, Industrial, Foreign Work, and Young men groups with named members.
