Miss Mabel Sears county superintendent reports that 98 rural Page County school children achieved perfect attendance this year. The column highlights rural schools in Clarinda and notes the statewide effort to emphasize steady attendance.
Ames programs begin Wednesday and run to July 22. A second short term safety course meets July 5 to July 22. Courses aim to acquaint teachers and others with safety principles.
A baby boy was born to a hitchhiker who gave her name as Lucille Murray, 23, of Tulsa Oklahoma. The infant was taken to Mercy hospital in an ambulance from the Denver Hog Serum Co yards on the west side where she sought help. The girl said she has no relatives and was alone.
Tsung Nin Chan, 28, warned not to return to Canton China, studies railroad methods for the North Western Division headquarters in Boone and will study projects at Ames and Clinton. He is the son of China’s private railroad president and holds a master’s degree from the University of Michigan, as the second oldest of 17 children.
Fourteen thousand pennies will pay the way of Mr and Mrs Chris Neilsen to the national Townsend club convention in Los Angeles California. Mrs Neilsen began saving four years ago as her husband bought items first including a car heater a radio and an electric stove. Finally he suggested the trip and she consented.
Apiarists from Hawaii is misprint. Four states Hainaois Wisconsin Minnesota and Iowa will send delegates to the Face Point park conference in Dubuque for a regional beekeeper meeting Friday and Saturday the first in a decade.
Eastern Iowa coin enthusiasts converge in Iowa City for a two day convention June 18 and 19. J. Henri Ripstia, president of the American Numismatic Association, will deliver the keynote address. Speakers include Earl M. Cole Des Moines V Leon Belt Waterloo and Lee Hewitt Chicago publisher of the Numismatic Scrapbook.
The South Fourth avenue community playground opened this afternoon despite threatening skies. Miss Vera Harvey and George Mohr led activities with stories for girls and games for boys while equipment including slides swings and a water fountain was ready. Supervision runs 1 to 5 daily with rain plans to move events to the Y M C A. Registration is urged with no cost.
Iowa state health officials report 181 of 654 municipalities meet water standards. Of these, 140 are fully approved, 41 expect final consent with signed forms. Approved towns may display a Public Water Supply Approved sign. 373 towns were refused and 16 withdrawals noted.
Washington Iowa residents filed more income tax returns for 1936 than 1935. The Internal Revenue Bureau reports nationwide nearly a million more returns in 1936, with Washington County rising from 350 to 357 returns and Iowa total increasing from 69,395 to 68,945.
A Fresno youth located the battered skyliner on Buena Vista Peak in Yosemite National Park, missing since March with nine aboard. The craft struck the 9,777 foot summit, killing all aboard, with eight bodies recovered and the ninth still in wreckage. pilot’s cap and airline official’s briefcase identified among the debris.
Frank Frazier a Washington printer remains in Mt. Pleasant hospital after a car collision on a hillside near a bridge. His wife Mrs. Ed Gray and Mrs. Esta Clark were injured but sent home after treatment. The other car from Fairfield caused the wreck. a terrier named Wally survived. Son Tom Gray and relatives cared for the injured. Frazier’s condition not believed serious, with scalp wound and minor concussion. X rays planned to rule out fracture.
A small gathering of Washington veterans from Company K of World War I, joined by families, pranked and reminisced at a picnic on the site of a Fort Madison riverbank camp near a Santa Fe bridge. Members from Washington, Columbus Junction, and Fort Madison attended with wives and children to mark the group’s second summer outing. The 1939 winter meeting will set time, place, and officer elections.
Reports say a two-car wreck on a hill near a creek bridge five miles north of Mt Pleasant left three injured but alive. The Fairfield vehicle was driven by Milton Ultman with Esther Finkel and Morris and Mrs J J Feldman among the passengers.
David Weimland of Bethlehem Pa will arrive later this week to serve as minister at Grace Hill church for the summer months. His father the late Joseph Weilmland preached at Grace Hill previously and is remembered by many in the community. The Ladies Aid society meets Wednesday to clean the church in preparation for the new minister’s arrival.
Captain Jay Brown and Troop F will host a visit by a representative from the Army and Navy Publishing company at the weekly drill. The visitor will review the unit, take posed and action photos, and select highlights for a future history of the National Guard units in town.
In Muscatine Iowa on Sunday night a riverfront quarrel led to a stabbing. Duke Slavins was held as a suspect and Saunders Charles Saunders was hospitalized with a wound below the heart.
Three more vacation schools start in Washington churches bringing total to seven with hundreds of children enrolled. Baptist church led by Rev I Fredmund reports about 75 pupils and staff, Presbyterian Rev Dr F W Eastwood says initial enrollment near 50 with more expected, and Christian church led by Rev Vernon H Carte reports 39 enrolled on day one. Children day exercises at Baptist church drew 175 in Sunday school and 250 to 300 in the morning service.
Over two hundred attend the annual get-together of southeastern Iowa Mennonite general conference churches held at the Eicher Emmanuel church in Noble. Leaders include Rev. Adolph Friesen of Donnellson and Rev. D. E. Welty of Eicher. delegates from Zion Donnellson Pulaski Wayland join for a noon basket dinner and social afternoon.
Washington June 13. Administration leaders agreed to adjourn by Wednesday night, blocking any railway relief legislation this session. Senate Majority Leader Barkley announced after talks with Roosevelt Garner Bankhead and Rayburn. Bailey, a senator, urged Congress not to stay in session longer.
A freight train derailed on the River Sioux Northwestern line causing a carload of wheat to burst and scatter over the right of way. A broken axle dangling from a freight car fouled the tracks and tore up several hundred feet of track. No injuries reported.
A farm home four miles northwest of town was destroyed by a Saturday evening fire around nine. William Chmelar and family saw the blaze as they returned, but the upper part burned beyond saving. Loss estimated near 2500 dollars with insurance on buildings and goods. The fire truck arrived too late to save the structure.
