Rome reports the Italia dirigible crashed on May 25 after a rapid 500 meter descent. Nobile’s unit survived the wreck, with gondola damage and mixed luggage scattered on the ice. Rescue hopes fade as radio contact remains silent and frostbitten survivors endure scarce rations.
Members of the Leon Beatty post American Legion host Henry county visitors at city hall. About fifty attendees from Mt. Pleasant Wayland Olds and Salem expected after a winter membership contest victory by Henry county. Dinner at 7:30 catered by Mrs. John Dodd followed by entertainment and talks from district commander Dr J W Laird and others.
More than 2,000 Iowa 4 H club girls at Iowa State College this week were to nominate state officers today.
Funeral services for John Morariey were held yesterday morning at St James Catholic Church followed by burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers were A B Swift Harry Whittaker John Brownhousen J M Kelley John Flynn and Joe Melinsky.

Corn made slow progress during the past week due to cool weather and scarce rain, with cultivation advancing steadily. Charles D. Reed notes most fields have been cultivated once, earliest corn cultivated third time, and overall crop condition is excellent. Oats and winter wheat show moisture stress and variable results. Strawberries and blackberries bloom. new potatoes in southern counties. In storms, little crop damage was seen though some corn washed out. Local county meeting notes praise Mrs Coffey and outline a five cent tax to cover meeting expenses.
A decision to send 1,500 additional troops to Nicaragua was reached at the White House after a conference with President Coolidge and navy and marine officials. A 600-strong marine force will be sent in advance as replacements.
George W. Hillhouse died yesterday evening at five at his daughter Mrs B F Miller's home where he had been living. He had suffered poor health for four years and been bedfast 18 months. Funeral Friday at 2:30 p.m. at L A Jones funeral home, burial in Benson cemetery. Born November 22, 1847 in Indiana he came to Washington county in 1852 settling Havre. Survived by six children. longtime Havre resident and United Brethren church member.
Iowa shoe retail dealers convene and vote to join the north western regional group for 1929 while preserving the Iowa retail show dealers association. James H. Stone of the national shoe dealers association says no relief in sight for hide prices and no shoe price reductions for at least two years.
Kansas City June 13. Senator George Moses of New Hampshire elected permanent chairman. A test vote defeated a minority report seating 18 Texas delegates opposed to Hoover. The platform dispute on farm plank continued as the credentials fight ended with the majority report adopted.
Iowa Republican delegates vote unanimously for Hu uford for president and McNider for vice president, with a platform committee approving a farm issue plank. In Kansas City the drafting committee discusses farm relief and a strong prohibition plank citing Washington and Lincoln, including explicit reference to the eighteenth amendment and law enforcement.
Senator Moses of New Hampshire, national convention permanent chairman, challenged the Democratic Party and Tammany Hall in a central Kansas City speech. He urged unity, attacked anti-corporation graft in New York, and warned Democrats not to trust a party backing free silver, rag money, or loose tariffs while pledging a strong GOP platform and eight years more of national leadership. He urged the party to bring forth its strongest champion and declared, We will bury him.
The Legion drum corps with business men plans to visit neighboring towns by car next week to promote Washingtons Fourth of July celebration. The first booster trip aims for Friday evening with two or three towns per night and Better Washington club backing the effort. Weather may affect two or three evenings of visits. A July baseball game between Columbus Junction and Washington is announced.

After a funeral dirge, the group retreated to their headquarters with promises to try again. The move tests whether farmer opposition can sway Hoover’s nomination and presidential appeal.
Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reports Gov. Alfred E. Smith told reporters Hoover had clinched the Republican nomination and remarked that Hoover ought not to be so hard to beat. Smith appeared unfazed by the Republican frontrunner as of June 18 in Rochester New York.
Kansas City dispatch reports 68 year old Illinois millionaire Frank O Lowden continues his bid for the Republican presidential nomination despite Hoover leading. He rejects defeat, insisting he will press the fight for agriculture and unity until he wins or is whipped.
Thursday at 7 30 p m the Better Washington club holds its next meeting in city hall. Members and others interested are urged to attend. Discuss plans for trips to neighboring towns to support the Legion Fourth of July celebration. Many Washington residents are expected to join the drum corps on these excursions.
