The USS Mississippi suffered a fatal turret explosion killing 48 sailors, including 3 officers and 45 enlisted men, during a Pacific fleet drill near San Pedro California. A court of inquiry investigates the cause while medical and rescue efforts proceed.
The Muscatine line, known as the Mun catine Burlington and Southern railway, ceases operations after 25 years of losses. Judge D W Jackson ordered discontinuance following Arthur Hoffman the present receiver. The road owes about 56 000 in taxes 96 000 on receivership debt and over a million on accruing judgments.
The seventeenth biennial convention of the Federation of Women’s Clubs in Los Angeles moves to a run-off for the second vice president after Florence Diebert of Pennsylvania led the Wednesday first ballot. George Brennan Illinois Democratic chairman arrives Monday. William G McAdoo expected Wednesday. David L Rockwell en route as campaign observer. Cordwell Hall national Democratic chairman arrived to take charge of headquarters.
Wisconsin Senator Robert M. La Follette accuses the national administration of turning its back on farmers and blames President Coolidge for Congress failing to pass needed farm relief. He cites special interests blocking reconvening and says both parties share responsibility.
In Ebensburg Pa on June 13 district attorney says murder and manslaughter charges will proceed against alleged Ku Klux Klansmen and Lilly residents for the April 5 Lilly affray that left three dead and several wounded. A jury convicted 31 defendants of affray and unlawful assemblage but acquitted 12 others. Sentences deferred pending a new trial motion.

Brig. Gen Charles G Dawes nominated Republican vice presidential candidate last night after a Marietta Ohio rally. He left Marietta for Chicago this afternoon to begin campaign planning with his family present. Dawes celebrated with classmates from the class of 1884 and attended Marietta College events before the nomination became public. He offered no detailed statement and declined interviews, saying only Well I declare after the radio announcement.
