The Israeli Embassy branded Newsweek’s report that Israeli planes and PT boats attacked the USS Liberty as malicious and unfounded. It called the claim that Israel aimed to strike a communications ship a tragic accident amid intense fighting in the area.
An explosion ripped through a military ship being loaded with artillery shells from surplus stores in Utrecht. Part of the nearby municipal power plant collapsed as 18 people were injured and a boy was missing and feared dead. Witnesses said a soldier dropped something in the ship’s hold before the blast.
United Press International reports Israel and Syria seen as violating the cease-fire. Israeli forces claim captures and skirmishes across Sinai and Judea. Soviet Tass notes new truce breaches. Disillusionment grows with Russia as Boumedienne travels to Moscow. About 2.6 million Israelis hold territory including Sinai, Jerusalem region, and parts of Syria. 100,000 Palestinians flee Jordan possessions as refugees.
Iowa House approved a bill by an 83 to 9 vote to declare the Sunday nearest August 10 Herbert Hoover Day a state holiday. The measure lets the governor issue a yearly proclamation urging Iowans to commemorate Hoover's life and display the flag. A second bill, passed 99 to 0, would allow cities to issue bonds to buy and improve existing parks, expanding beyond new parks.
Tass reports the USSR launched an unmanned Venus station atop a rocket, a first since 1965. Venus 2 and Venus 3 previously passed within 15,000 miles. Venus 3 failed its cameras at atmospheric entry, while Venus 2 reached near Venus. The mission aims for a four month transit, covering at least 25 million miles. The attempt preserved a Soviet coat of arms on Venus.
In Tampa Florida hundreds of Negroes clashed with police early Sunday, hurling rocks and firing at officers. The unrest followed the fatal shooting of 19 year old Martin Chambers during a burglary chase. Firefighters and police battled looting and fires as crowds gathered in the Central Park area. A deputy sheriff, Sgt. Don Williams, collapsed and died later of an apparent heart attack.
The Supreme Court invalidated a New York statute authorizing court approved electronic eavesdropping in criminal cases. In a 6 to 3 decision the court held the law violated the Fourth Amendment protecting against unreasonable searches and seizures. Justice Tom C. Clark wrote the majority opinion warning of threats to liberty from eavesdropping devices.
U S B 52 bombers returned to strikes just south of the DMZ defying missile threats. North Vietnamese mortar and artillery shelling hit Marine positions near the Cua Viet River with about 25 wounded as U S jets targeted Haiphong Hanoi Kep Mig base and industrial areas in North Vietnam.
Farmers waited for water logged fields to drain and dry so they could replant drowned out corn and soybeans as more rain loomed, with officials noting drought relief overall but isolated replant needs. Red Oak records over 16 inches this month. Several highways remained closed by high water including Iowa 3 near Iowa 263, Iowa 42 to Riverton, Iowa 46 in Des Moines, and Iowa 76 to West Liberty.
National Guardsmen moved up a hillside barrio after Stokely Carmichael’s jailing sparked a riot in Pratttville Alabama. Negro snipers wounded two policemen and a dog handler as authorities sealed off a 20 block Negro district. A house was shot in a gunfight as guardsmen and troopers converged with orders to shoot to kill if attacked. Carmichael was jailed on disorderly conduct after a clash near a civil rights rally at a church and taken to Autauga County Jail for bond hearings.
Two persons die in a Sunday two car crash south of LeMars, with Larry Lang 28 LeMars and Clarence Steinke 61 Larrabee Iowa among the dead. The collision occurred about one mile south of LeMars on a Plymouth County road. The weekend Iowa highway deaths also include a 16 year old motorcyclist, Dennis Paul Phipps, killed near Cherokee, and two Central City men, David E. White and Harold Silvers, in a crash east of Coggan on Iowa 13. Diane Martin 20 WaUkon died from injuries after a car driven by Harlan 25 went out of control near Postville on Iowa 51. James N Layton 19 Mason City died in a Mason City bike crash Friday night.

Iowa Governor Harold E Hughes said he may push ahead with a pilot program to rehabilitate alcoholics despite a Republican attorney general ruling it illegal and unconstitutional. He hadn t seen the 30 page opinion until the morning news conference and said he would study it before deciding whether to continue ICAP funding, which mixes federal and state money.
